Back in 2003, \u2018<em>Antenna<\/em>\u2019 and a short spell on a major label nearly broke the band. Since then, their output has been sporadic and their last release arrived eight years ago. As the band reunited to create \u2018<em>Final Transmission<\/em>\u2019, tragedy struck. Bassist Caleb Scofield was killed in a car accident. Thrown into turmoil, the band eventually finished the record. The loss of their friend haunts its creation and shapes its sound.<\/p>\n<p>The poignant \u2018<em>Final Transmission<\/em>\u2019 sits as a prelude. \u00a0An acoustic demo, it was recorded by Schofield and held on an email server and remained undiscovered until after his death. It\u2019s simple, stripped back and had to be included. It\u2019s a contrast to everything else.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the band\u2019s allure is their ability to mix sounds without losing their identity. Undoubtedly, this is <strong>Cave In <\/strong>but it\u2019s different to any album they\u2019ve created. The metal stylings of \u2018<em>White Silence<\/em>\u2019 are gone. Instead and without repeating themselves, they revisit the space-rock sound of the \u2018<em>Tides of Tomorrow<\/em>\u2019 era. Its unusual soundscapes trade heavily on Adam McGrath\u2019s swirling guitar. Hence, the album is anything but straightforward but with some real gems buried within it. However, it does suffer the inconsistencies of their post-\u2018<em>Jupiter<\/em>\u2019 output. So, while it is a good record overall, you can easily split it into tiers of quality.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"All Illusion\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G6pnX5A892k?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>All Illusion<\/em>\u2019 was a little flaccid as a single and perhaps the rockier \u2018<em>Strange Reflection<\/em>\u2019 would have been a better choice. It hooks you with a searing lead guitar, groovy bass line and Brodsky\u2019s soaring voice and is a highlight. Similarly, the unsettling guitar streaks and high vocal of \u2018<em>Winter Window<\/em>\u2019 are a standout. On the more experimental side, \u2018<em>Led To The Wolves<\/em>\u2019 is pleasingly noisy, but in a very different way to the scratchy swirling static found on \u2018<em>Lunar Day<\/em>\u2019. Both shape the album, neither is great.<\/p>\n<p>Liberally sprinkled with <strong>Cave In<\/strong> magic, <em>\u2018Final Transmission\u2019 <\/em>is subtly adventurous.
