The raw garage punk of the California band\u2019s previous work is still present, but it\u2019s more refined than what we\u2019ve seen from them before; slightly more mainstream-sounding in parts too.<\/p>\n<p>Frontman Brandon Blaine described the process of writing album opener \u2018<em>New<\/em> <em>Comedown<\/em>\u2019 as seeing <em>\u201clots of colours and themes that were coming through\u201d<\/em> and this variety definitely seems to manifest itself in the album. There are songs such as \u2018<em>All Of The Above<\/em>\u2019, which have a cleaner, straightforward alternative sound, juxtaposed with the likes of \u2018<em>Nothing\u2019s Wrong<\/em>\u2019, a ferocious punk anthem that sees Blaine shouting that \u201c<em>There\u2019s nothing wrong with me\/There\u2019s something wrong with you<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The way in which <strong>Plague Vendor<\/strong> can chop and change between nihilistic noise-punk and more luminous alt-rock is what makes \u2018<em>By Night<\/em>\u2019 so appealing. There&#8217;s a clear influence taken from proto-punk \u2013 Iggy, MC5, New York Dolls \u2013 but there are also comparisons to be made with contemporary acts. They\u2019re reminiscent of the likes of Drenge and METZ on here, with a bluesy noise rock take on punk.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Plague Vendor - &quot;New Comedown&quot;\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Rti4NxhEj9w?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As the album goes on, there\u2019s a slight dip in quality in the middle \u2013 \u2018<em>White<\/em> <em>Wall<\/em>\u2019 and \u2018<em>Night<\/em> <em>Sweats<\/em>\u2019 feel more generic than the rest of \u2018<em>By Night<\/em>\u2019. Luckily, <strong>Plague Vendor<\/strong> get back on course with the energetic \u2018<em>Pain In My Heart<\/em>\u2019. Jay Rogers\u2019 fast-paced, frantic guitar work intersects with Blaine\u2019s fraught vocals, making for a welcome aural assault. It\u2019s followed by \u2018<em>Snakeskin Boots<\/em>\u2019, the intro of which consists of a capella sprechgesang from Blaine before Michael Perez joins in on bass, providing an altogether foreboding atmosphere.
