After a couple of years of missing bands due to ridiculous queues into certain venues, the move to a new location seemed ideal. Sure, it\u2019s not in the city centre anymore (no more \u201coff-site\u201d trips to McDonalds) but Temple Newsam makes up for it. Walking around the new site made it easier to watch bands without any hassle, and as pointless as this may sound &#8211; <strong>Slam Dunk North<\/strong> felt like a \u201creal festival\u201d. So with all that being said, what did the sights and sounds of the improved SDF have to offer?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With punters being given time to find their bearings to this new site, <strong>Angel Du$t <\/strong>(2.5\/5) open up the Impericon stage with a mix of hardcore punk and their jangly take on 90s alt-rock. <em>\u2018Headstone\u2019<\/em> and <em>&#8216;Let It Rot&#8217;<\/em> blast through early on before highlights from <em>&#8216;Pretty Buff<\/em>&#8216;, &#8216;<em>Bang My Drum&#8217;<\/em>, <em>&#8216;Want It All&#8217;<\/em> and<em> &#8216;Big Ass Love&#8217; <\/em>rein things in yet don&#8217;t have the same urgency you&#8217;d like from an opening band.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Anti-Flag being a big pull across the field, the turnout for <strong>Wallflower<\/strong> (3\/5) isn\u2019t that impressive. Nevertheless, the quintet don\u2019t seem hindered by it as they showcase their brand of stirring alt-rock. Admittedly when they temporarily rein things in, they go into a lull yet but they make up for with it with impact. It\u2019s just unfortunate that they suffered some technical bugs.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"alignnormal\"><div id=\"metaslider-id-80269\" style=\"max-width: 1280px;\" class=\"ml-slider-3-109-0 metaslider metaslider-flex metaslider-80269 ml-slider has-dots-nav ms-theme-simply-dark\" role=\"region\" aria-label=\"Boston Manor - Slam Dunk North - 25\/05\/2019\" data-height=\"853\" data-width=\"1280\">\n    <div id=\"metaslider_container_80269\">\n        <div id=\"metaslider_80269\">\n            <ul class='slides'>\n                <li style=\"display: block; width: 100%;\" class=\"slide-82984 ms-image \" aria-roledescription=\"slide\" data-date=\"2019-06-03 17:00:34\" data-filename=\"IMG_7457_1-1280x853.jpg\" data-slide-type=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_7457_1-1280x853.jpg\" height=\"853\" width=\"1280\" alt=\"\" class=\"slider-80269 slide-82984 msDefaultImage\" title=\"BostonManor-2.jpg\"><\/li>\n            <\/ul>\n        <\/div>\n        \n    <\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Balaclava-wearing <strong>Boston Manor<\/strong> (3.5\/5) are eager to get this crowd to wake up, as they open with tracks from <em>&#8216;Welcome to the Neighbourhood&#8217;<\/em>, and while it takes until <em>&#8216;Laika&#8217;<\/em> for them to respond, by the time the chorus of <em>&#8216;Stick Up\u2019<\/em> hits, Henry Cox has the crowd in a frenzy.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aussie favourites <strong>Trophy Eyes <\/strong>(4\/5) waste no time, jumping straight into <em>&#8216;Friday Forever&#8217;<\/em>.\u00a0 With highlights from both<em> &#8216;Chemical Miracle&#8217;<\/em> and<em> &#8216;The American Dream&#8217;<\/em> dominating their 40-minute set, the quintet provide a fun and energetic outing.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A return to the Key Club tent sees <strong>Press To MECO<\/strong> thriving with a mix of soaring melodies and dense riffs. Closing with the bold <em>&#8216;Here\u2019s To The Fatigue&#8217;<\/em>, the reasonably small yet dedicated crowd are appreciative of <strong>Press To MECO<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>SDF<\/strong> debut.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That might be a bit of cast over but <strong>The Interrupters<\/strong> (3\/5) but that\u2019s not going to dampen their spirits as they draw in a big crowd over on the Punk in Drublic stage. Their spirited, welcoming attitude resonates as they showcase their two-tone and West Coast-influenced ska-punk<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canadian group <strong>Seaway<\/strong> (3.5\/5) are in a buoyant mood as they deliver feel-good pop-punk in abundance. Highlights such as <em>&#8216;London&#8217;<\/em>,<em> &#8216;Lula on the Beach&#8217; <\/em>and the closing pairing of <em>&#8216;Best Mistake&#8217;<\/em> and<em> &#8216;Something Wonderful&#8217;<\/em> wake up the crowd from their late afternoon lull.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier than scheduled,<strong> The Get Up Kids<\/strong> (4\/5) (swapped slots with Saves The Day) take to the Dickies stage and know what is expected of them; 40 minutes of classic emo rock. With favourable cuts from the recently released <em>&#8216;Problems&#8217;<\/em> (<em>&#8216;Satellite&#8217;<\/em>, <em>&#8216;Lou Barlow&#8217;<\/em>) being scattered through a set that includes a handful of fan favourites (&#8216;<em>I\u2019m A Loner Dottie, A Rebel&#8217;<\/em>, <em>&#8216;Shorty&#8217;<\/em>, &#8216;<em>Action &amp; Action&#8217;<\/em>), <strong>TGUK<\/strong> produce a satisfying set that leaves us just wanting that bit more.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Real Friends<\/strong> (4\/5) make up for lost time having cancelled last year\u2019s appearance for personal reasons. Nevertheless, they serve up a pleasing set threaded with sincerity from vocalist Dan Lambert. Admittedly, the grey skies and light rain meant the weather affected the band\u2019s sound but they soldiered on, closing with two recent favourites &#8211; <em>\u2018Me First\u2019<\/em> and <em>\u2018From the Outside\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"alignnormal\"><div id=\"metaslider-id-80435\" style=\"max-width: 1280px;\" class=\"ml-slider-3-109-0 metaslider metaslider-flex metaslider-80435 ml-slider has-dots-nav ms-theme-simply-dark\" role=\"region\" aria-label=\"Employed To Serve - Slam Dunk North - 25\/05\/2019\" data-height=\"853\" data-width=\"1280\">\n    <div id=\"metaslider_container_80435\">\n        <div id=\"metaslider_80435\">\n            <ul class='slides'>\n                <li style=\"display: block; Questionably one of the heaviest offerings on the bill, <strong>ETS<\/strong> don\u2019t hold back with an intense albeit brief set. It sees guitarist Sammy Urwin surf over the crowd while his bandmates deliver a thrilling glimpse of their ferocity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back over on the Punk In Drubic stage, and in the pouring rain,<strong> Less Than Jake<\/strong> (3.5\/5) wastes no time putting smiles on people&#8217;s faces. From the opening rich horns of <em>\u2018Gainesville Rock City\u2019<\/em>, the ska-punk group live up to expectations with a set packed full of irresistibly fun songs.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The great thing about wondering around festivals is that you may stumble into something you didn\u2019t expect. It\u2019s exactly what <strong>grandson<\/strong> (3.5\/5) did inside the Key Club tent. Mistakenly thought of as a hip-hop act, it\u2019s clear Jordan Benjamin and his band have a passion for rock, as they bring an explosive and energetic display. It\u2019s easy to see why <strong>grandson<\/strong> are so highly thought of in some circles.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, <strong>Touch\u00e9 Amor\u00e9<\/strong> (4\/5) have become a reliable live force and today is no different. Vocalist Jeremy Bolm is as impassioned as ever and his yelps on <em>\u2018Flowers on You\u2019<\/em> and <em>\u2018New Halloween\u2019<\/em> are sung back to him by a busy and enthusiastic crowd. Whereas Elliot Babin\u2019s drumming is as kinetic and precise as ever. Sure longtime fans may didn\u2019t get anything from \u2018<em>\u2026To The\u00a0Beat\u00a0Of A\u00a0Dead Horse\u2019<\/em>, yet it\u2019s clear <strong>TA<\/strong> have a wealth of emotionally raw post-hardcore to choose from.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Slam Dunk veterans, <strong>New Found Glory<\/strong> knows what a packed-out (yet very wet) crowd want. With a set crammed with classics with a few movie-related covers splattered throughout, don\u2019t disappoint. Longtime classics \u2018Failure\u2019s Not Flattering\u2019, \u2018Hit And Miss\u2019 and \u2018Head On Collision\u2019 are complemented by NFG\u2019s take of Frozen\u2019s \u2018Let It Go\u2019 and \u2018The Power of Love\u2019 (from Back To The Future), and although they\u2019re questionable inclusions they definitely keep the momentum going.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Closing the Dickies stage was Slam Dunk debutants <strong>The Menzingers<\/strong> (4.5\/5). Having spent some time away working on new material, this 14-song set serves as a celebration of the band\u2019s recent hat-trick of albums. With a large dedicated in attendance, they join the Philadelphia four-piece by stirring up a punk-fuelled party with singalongs aplenty. From the opening of \u2018<em>Tellin\u2019 Lies\u2019<\/em>, there is a feel-good, energy all around with the quartet having as much as fun as the crowd.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sure there are plenty of other bands to close the day with, but you\u2019re not going to find a band delivering heartfelt punk anthems like <strong>The Menzingers<\/strong> do. There\u2019s something so pleasing singing about pointless degrees (<em>\u2018Midwestern States\u2019<\/em>), admitting that you\u2019re going to <em>\u201cfuck this up\u201d<\/em> (<em>\u2018The Obituaries\u2019<\/em>) and reminiscing about <em>\u2018Casey\u2019<\/em> while being surrounded by newfound friends. After all, isn\u2019t that what music is supposed to do? Bring people together?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If that\u2019s the aim of <strong>Slam Dunk<\/strong>, then they have thoroughly succeeded. The improvements to the North portion of the weekend seemed to go off without a hitch. Of course, the occasional outdoor sound issue are expected, as are the food and drink prices, yet these are minuscule complaints compared to the wealth of bands on offer.
