In the last few years we\u2019ve seen Ghost<\/b> breathing new life (or death) into occult rock, we\u2019ve had Beastmilk<\/b> doing their best Joy-Division-gone-metal thang and then of course there\u2019s been the blistering sound of Kvelertak<\/b> stirring hardcore, black metal and good ol\u2019 fashioned rock n roll together like it ain\u2019t no biggy. It\u2019s fair to say that we can consider adding Copenhagen\u2019s Evra<\/b> to the list of basterdising bastards with the release of their debut album \u2018Lightbearer\u2019<\/i>.<\/figure>\n<\/p>\n

On paper, the idea of Cursed<\/b>-style hardcore and Dillinger Escape Plan<\/b>-esque vocals swirled through with a good dollop of Doom sounds pretty horrific, but kudos to Evra<\/b> for sticking it all in the genre-blender and coming up with something not only palatable but, arguably more importantly, interesting as well. In reality, Evra<\/b> don\u2019t have quite as big of a doom influence on their sound as they\u2019d perhaps like to think they do, but as far as presenting a fresh take on an established Euro-hardcore sound, they get it bang on target. <\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

Sure, \u2018Washed Away\u2019<\/i> opens with some genuine doom-mongering and is catchy as hell, but the rest of the song is more akin to a cleaned-up Black Breath<\/b> as it rollicks along on a pseudo death-\u2018n\u2019-roll gallop. Similarly \u2018The Occultist\u2019<\/i> is all low-slung guitars to start with, before roaring off into the distance in the direction of Every Time I Die<\/b>. Cracking songs and great fun all round, but where it\u2019s obvious what the aforementioned Kvelertak<\/b> are trying to achieve, with Evra<\/b> the music darts off in several directions at once, which makes for a slightly confusing listen at times. <\/p>\n

The most coherent and well-directed passage of the album comes in the shape of closing trimurti of the title track, \u2018Let Them Fall\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Formorket; The End\u2019<\/i>. The three are perfectly paced and melded together as hardcore AND doom to great effect. \u2018Let Them Fall\u2019<\/i> in particular is shot through with a venom and intensity that some other tracks lack. By this point, Evra<\/b> have clearly found their feet and finish a beguiling if occasionally puzzling record with an almighty flourish. <\/p>\n

\u2018Lightbearer\u2019<\/i> will certainly have you scratching your head on first listen, but it\u2019s got enough about it as have the band themselves to force even the shortest attention span to give it several spins. A bullseye stylistically? Maybe not, but it\u2019s close enough for now.<\/p>\n
