The solid rock at its nucleus, Max Cavalera, emerges quite surprisingly as the one factor letting down their tenth opus \u2018Archangel\u2019, throwing his iconic weight behind adventurous production techniques that fall short of their epic expectations. <!-- more --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full tmblr-embed\"><\/figure>\n<p>The fast-paced rage of <i>\u2018We Sold Our Souls To Metal\u2019<\/i> opens, with Cavalera throwing in a casual <i>\u201ccome on punk, make my day.\u201d<\/i> Max\u2019s son and drummer Zyon takes crucial centre stage throughout the gargantuan title track, framed by somewhat misplaced discursive sound bites. <i>\u2018Sodomites\u2019<\/i> opens on otherworldly production on Cavalera\u2019s vocals forming a feral character, however, let down by a playful backing riff.<\/p>\n<p>While each <b>Soulfly<\/b> venture includes a contagious chant of the track title, <i>\u2018Archangel\u2019<\/i>\u2019s offering is somewhat cheesy, with <i>\u2018Ishtar Rising\u2019<\/i> descending into a playful repetition. As if the vocal contribution couldn\u2019t get much more laughable, <i>\u2018Live Life Hard!\u2019<\/i> bursts forth with deafeningly high pitched alterations, luckily salvaged by impressive fretwork and a driven beat.<\/p>\n<p>A beautiful electric solo on <i>\u2018Shamash\u2019<\/i> pushes aside the preceding comic factor and the unexpected regal horn backing of <i>\u2018Bethlehem\u2019s Blood\u2019<\/i>, reinstating the thrash vibrancy they ave become synonymous with over their career. No matter how far they step away from what they do best, the crucial saving grace is their ability to return back to home soil.<\/p>\n<p>The classic colossal thrash of <i>\u2018Titans\u2019<\/i> draws a fairly humorous comparison with a scene from Disney\u2019s Hercules, while the unrelenting <i>\u2018Deceiver\u2019<\/i> draws the concept back down to earth with a face-melter, before abruptly closing on a meandering improv for <i>\u2018Mother Of Dragons\u2019<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>All chuckle-inducing vocal effects aside, <i>\u2018Archangel\u2019<\/i> is an instrumental gem, producing their thrash credentials with as much fervour as ever.
