A career-boosting stint as the band\u2019s main supports saw them join Century Media Records. Now the industrial machine are back with third album \u2018<em>Metawar<\/em>\u2019. After last year\u2019s collaboration EP with noise-monsters Ho99o9, hopes are high. However, as the new album unfolds you quickly discover which band did the heavy lifting on that release.<\/p>\n<p>Hoping to catch your eye, the band produced five singles with slick music videos, sadly the songs struggle to catch your ears. \u2018<em>American Landfill<\/em>\u2019 and \u2018<em>Affluenza<\/em>\u2019 might revel in gated drums and stomping basslines, but truly great singles shouldn\u2019t have you checking your watch. \u00a0Partly, this monotony is due to the record&#8217;s sludgy sound. True, it evokes an industrial landscape, but it also smothers many of the band\u2019s ideas. Not that they had many to begin with.<\/p>\n<p>Peeling back the layers of white noise does reveal interesting undercurrents.\u00a0 On \u2018<em>Altaer<\/em>\u2019 the sleazy bassline creates a strange atmosphere, which only enhances the groove. \u00a0\u2018<em>Time Slave<\/em>\u2019 uses a similar trick, offsetting the driving riffs with uncomfortable screeching synths. It\u2019s a frantic sound, which really stands out. \u2018<em>Sell Your Face 2.0<\/em>\u2019 also uses this to great effect. It\u2019s stronger, more confident and genuinely powerful, even if its chorus is woefully forgettable.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"3TEETH - PUMPED UP KICKS\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lYIsZr9L_rM?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Vocalist Alexis Mincolla is often buried in the mix, and when he\u2019s not, he doesn\u2019t have a lot to say. True, \u2018<em>President X<\/em>\u2019 might have a political slant, but rather than rise up, you\u2019re more likely to nod off.<\/p>\n<p>Producer Sean Beavan is one of the genre\u2019s old hands, but the songs here would really have benefited from a fresh perspective. It\u2019s no surprise the best are crisper, more melodic and don\u2019t feel like a pale imitation of an early Manson record.<\/p>\n<p>Derivative and competent in all the wrong ways, \u2018<em>Metawar<\/em>\u2019 struggles to be more than the sum of its parts.
