\"\"Despite somewhat overbearing production, Northlane<\/b>\u2019s new chapter with vocalist Marcus Bridge begins with a gentle \u2018Node\u2019<\/i> to their peers.<\/figure>\n

Synonymous with the rise of metalcore into atmospheric realms, the Sydney quintet have come a long way. Named after an Architects track, it seemed only fitting to follow their predecessor\u2019s \u2018Lost Forever \/\/ Lost Together\u2019 with a timely homage. However, the similarities are glaringly obvious and thus \u2018Node\u2019<\/i> treads very little new ground, ticking generic genre stereotype boxes on its journey. <\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

“I refuse to die here,”<\/i> spits ethereal opener \u2018Soma\u2019<\/i>, blazing a surreal trail into lead single \u2018Obelisk\u2019<\/i>, an anthem to a fading flame, putting Marcus Bridge\u2019s studio debut on track from the start. Alongside \u2018Ohm\u2019<\/i>\u2019s powerfully relaxing ode to breathing easy, title track \u2018Node\u2019<\/i> proves driven by an other-worldly guitar rhythm and a disillusioned ethos of humanity \u201cslipping through the cracks.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Anguished screams prevail throughout \u2018Rot\u2019<\/i>, Bridge\u2019s strained cries for salvation creating yet another catchy anthem to add to their collection. Bridge\u2019s heartfelt prowess throughout the lulling \u2018Leech\u2019<\/i> unfortunately loses centre stage to ambitious surreal production, despite the impressive efforts of guitarist Jon Deiley.<\/p>\n

In contrast, however, Bridge\u2019s calculating lyrical realism and rage takes centre stage during \u2018Impulse\u2019<\/i> and the serene \u2018Weightless\u2019<\/i>, both of which successfully prove drummer Nic Pettersen\u2019s worth as their driving force.<\/p>\n

Clean and unclean vocals stand shoulder to shoulder through the periodically atmospheric \u2018Ra\u2019<\/i>, while the melodic heartbreak of \u2018Animate\u2019<\/i> frames a phenomenal electric solo. All the while, however, it\u2019s hard to see through the mist of overproduction that lets this record down.<\/p>\n

When held subjectively, \u2018Node\u2019<\/i> comes as a satisfactory step toward the future for a band that could well have made the wrong move in choosing a new frontman back in October. Marcus Bridge significantly makes his presence felt, but sometimes you can put so much effort into being unusual, you become one of the crowd.<\/p>\n
