\"\" I will readily admit to knowing absolutely nothing about The Flatliners<\/b> when I picked up this review, so to get to know a band through a rarities release is a little arse about face to say the least. However, as the first 16 songs are basically a compilation of singles and recent non-album tracks it actually serves to give a fairly accurate impression of the band and with the addition of five covers and two super oldies this makes for a hefty release, suitable for die-hard fans and the most willing newcomers.<\/figure>\n

What would be the first three sides of a double vinyl is the 16 recent non-album tracks, which make for an uptempo collection of hard rocking punk pop tunes that are brightly melodic without being poppy radio pleasers. Chris Cresswell has a strong voice full of gravel, which gives the Canadians a harder edge than many similar bands, even on the more forgettable tracks like \u2018Cut Your Teeth\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Daggers\u2019<\/i>. <\/p>\n

There are a number of tightly played hard rocking tracks on display though, the catchy \u2018Lifers\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Calutron Girls\u2019<\/i>, with its shredding solo, both hitting the spot. Other high points include the furious \u2018Run Like Hell\u2019<\/i>, the vocally driven \u2018Broken Men\u2019<\/i> and the heavyweight \u2018407\u2019<\/i>. Unfortunately, the record does start to drag a little as one track blends into another, the awful lyric of \u2018Hot Trouble\u2019<\/i> being the albums lowest point. <\/p>\n

Thank Christ for the cover version and bonus tracks then! Apart from the dull \u2018Ahead by a Century\u2019<\/i> (The Tragically Hip) the other covers are a refreshing blast of punky frolics; Johnny Cash\u2019s \u2018Cry, Cry, Cry\u2019<\/i>, Astpai\u2019s \u2018Southwards\u2019<\/i> and Rocket from the Crypt\u2019s \u2018Straight American Slave\u2019<\/i> all maintaining their cool whilst getting The Flatliners<\/b> stamp. However, they actually save the best till last, with the superb pure punk rock of \u2018Get out of My Face\u2019<\/i> and the ska-tinged \u2018Spill your Guts\u2019<\/i>, which makes me want to check out their early work. <\/p>\n

Although an album of 23 tracks is probably a little daunting for someone new to the band, especially given the more monotonous moments, there is enough good stuff on here to warrant further investigation, as well as a few gems for the more nerdy follower. <\/p>\n
