Early on, comparisons can be made with Miley Cyrus\u2019 recent Nine Inch Nails covers for Netflix&#8217;s &#8216;Black Mirror&#8217;. &#8216;<em>Bones UK&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0can be a dark and uncomfortable listen at times, but it comes with the territory; <strong>BONES<\/strong> are full-on, forthright, and don\u2019t care what you think.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t run-of-the-mill riot grrrl. Although there is a clear influence present, shades of Peaches and Goldfrapp can be heard \u2013 feminist punk meets electroclash in this gripping merging of genres. \u201c<em>What a waste of a pretty face<\/em>\u201d declares vocalist Rosie Bones in a mocking fashion over killer drums and synths in \u2018<em>Pretty Waste<\/em>&#8216;, getting the album off to a storming start three songs in.<\/p>\n<p>On occasion, they go for a more mainstream sound. \u2018<em>Skeletons<\/em>\u2019 isn\u2019t a complete divergence from the \u2018dark pop\u2019 sound that the likes of Lorde and Halsey have popularised in recent years. Meanwhile, opener \u2018<em>Beautiful Is Boring<\/em>\u2019 is a strong track, with an electro beat that could be straight out of Britney Spears\u2019 late-2000s output.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"BONES UK - Creature (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ipvb1Dblia0?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As talented as they are, the novelty starts to wear off slightly towards the end of the album \u2013 the feeling is that 12 tracks is a bit of a stretch, and perhaps ten would have been preferable. \u2018<em>Black Blood<\/em>\u2019 comes in at over four minutes, and its stripped-back, soft-rock feel is completely at odds with the rest of the album. Sandwiched between the far more enthralling \u2018<em>Creature<\/em>\u2019 and \u2018<em>Limbs<\/em>\u2019, it feels like the obligatory \u2018slow song\u2019 shoehorned in purely to tick a box.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, they don\u2019t go out with a whimper. Album closer \u2018<em>Girls Can\u2019t Play Guitar<\/em>\u2019 is one of the best tracks here, heavier with bluesy undertones. If we can take one thing away from <strong>BONES<\/strong>, it\u2019s that they definitely <em>can<\/em>.
