\"image\"As a child of the 90s, I have an affinity with the college rock\/alt-rock boom, with bands such as Pavement, Soul Asylum, The Flaming Lips and Wilco all featuring large in my collection. <\/figure>\n

Between the emergence of Cheap Girls, Beach Slang and the UK\u2019s very own Kagoule, we\u2019re seeing a re-birth of that classic sound, and Brooklyn\u2019s Adult Dude<\/b> definitely fit into this category. <\/p>\n

Owing more to the likes of Dinosaur Jr and their fuzzed, hazy sound, Adult Dude<\/b> are a band that would live left of the dial, but fit right in alongside many of my teenage favourites. <\/p>\n

Adult Moods by Adult Dude<\/a><\/figure>\n

\u2018Adult Moods\u2019<\/i> takes a little while to get going. The opening salvo of \u2018Junior Junior\u2019<\/i> and ‘80 MPH’<\/i> leaning a little too heavily on the shoulder of J Mascis and Lou Barlow\u2019s legendary alt-rock group and don\u2019t leave too much of an impression. The oddly titled \u2018Riff Dog\u2019<\/i> and \u2018New Son Gay\u2019<\/i> fare much better however, showing much more individuality, while \u2018Marinara Veins\u2019<\/i> is the outstanding song of the first side. None deviate too heavily from the Superchunk\/Dinosaur Jr blueprint and if you\u2019re a fan of those bands, then there\u2019s a strong chance you\u2019ll enjoy \u2018Adult Moods\u2019<\/i>. <\/p>\n

The second half is just as good, although you\u2019ll be surprised at just how brief it is. Three of the songs all clock in less than 2 minutes, meaning it\u2019s a short, sharp, alt-rock shock. For some reason \u2018Cupcake\u2019<\/i> reminds me a touch of the Foo Fighters, but still retains the buzzsaw charm of the rest of the record. <\/p>\n

\u2018Hev Dog\u2019<\/i> is a bit of a curveball amidst all of the fizzing guitars and yelped vocals; a 6-minute plus Alternative Nation anthem that shows there\u2019s more to Adult Dude<\/b> than throwaway punk songs. It\u2019s interesting, but definitely not what they do best. <\/p>\n

Overall, \u2018Adult Moods\u2019<\/i> is an enjoyable, if hardly essential, listen. There\u2019s just enough about it to ensure it\u2019s not merely a tribute to a previous era, but instead feels current and relevant, and by keeping things short and punchy it doesn\u2019t overstay its welcome.<\/p>\n
