However, with the addition of Kieran Alexander, they&#8217;re now a band reborn known as <strong>Petlib.<\/strong> It sees the trio take things in an entirely different direction as <i>&#8216;Maker&#8217;<\/i> is served up as an experimental post-rock odyssey. You\u2019d best prepare for a bumpy ride.<\/p>\n<p>From the outset, the album is a deconstruction of genre and instead, it follows a concept. Each song does feel distinct while being part of a larger whole. The story concerns a scientist who creates a universe within their own mind and becomes a god. It&#8217;s all very unsubtle, especially as large passages are literally readout. It is very effective on the druggy \u2018<em>Amnesia<\/em>\u2019 and the more expansive \u2018<em>Ache<\/em>\u2019, but can also be unintentionally hilarious.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a restless and unfocused collection. The runtime is largely an ice age of tinkling pianos. Yet, \u2018<em>Reflection<\/em>\u2019 suddenly erupts into jarring mathcore, like Botch having a seizure. This wild heavy sound continues on \u2018<em>Return,<\/em>\u2019 where sheets of synths add an extra dimension. Before long they\u2019re exploring nightmarish dreamscapes on \u2018<em>Disintegrate<\/em>\u2019 and post-hardcore riffs on \u2018<em>Wounds<\/em>\u2019. Nothing seems off-limits resulting in the kind of odd record Mike Patton might make.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Petlib. - Shell (Official Transmission)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_0MpK18aSkg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The only time the band show restraint is the album&#8217;s runtime. Strange ideas run wild. For example parts of \u2018<em>Tyrant<\/em>\u2019 fade out, like the recordist grew tired and walked away from the band. Hence, it\u2019s a challenging, uncomfortable listen. You do find great parts, but they are few and far between.<\/p>\n<p>Despite covering a lot of sonic ground, the album isn\u2019t always as deep or meaningful as you might hope. However, not knowing what will happen next keeps you listening and curiosity does make you return for more.<\/p>\n<p>Hugely ambitious, \u2018<em>Maker<\/em>\u2019 is an experimental art album, impossible to pigeonhole, hard to love and difficult to listen to.
