After shedding members, lawsuits and five long years, the vast unwieldy machine known as <strong>Slipknot<\/strong> has returned. Internal strife, coupled with the band\u2019s keen eye for marketing, means each new album feels like a triumph in itself. Yet, \u2018<em>We Are Not Your Kind<\/em>\u2019 wants to redefine the band. It features a streamlined version of their signature sound. Crammed with clean singing and crisp riffing, it\u2019s the band shooting straight for mass appeal.<\/p>\n<p>If you wanted something dark and twisted, this isn\u2019t that record. They were never going to recapture the self-destruction that fuelled the caustic horror of \u2018<em>Iowa<\/em>\u2019. That side of their sound is gone. Instead, this is gigantic and accessible. Songs such as \u2018<em>Unsainted<\/em>\u2019 and \u2018<em>Birth Of The Crue<\/em>l\u2019 bask in huge choruses, while <em>\u2018Critical Darling\u2019<\/em> showers you with so many great vocal hooks, it\u2019s almost sickening. Likewise, \u2018<em>Red Flag<\/em>\u2019 is a slick, straightforward metalcore song. It comes complete with a huge breakdown, just to show other bands how it\u2019s done.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Slipknot - Solway Firth [OFFICIAL VIDEO]\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V3ADK6gsDGg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, this accessibility comes at the expense of experimentation. Remember how off the off-the-wall \u2018<em>Vol.3<\/em>\u2019 was? You get the merest taste of that here. Only the slow electronic \u2018<em>My Pain<\/em>\u2019 feels unlike anything they&#8217;ve created before. Both this and \u2018<em>Spiders<\/em>\u2019 feature strangely warm, optimistic sounds with an evil <em>something<\/em> lurking inside. It\u2019s this disquiet which is so effective. \u00a0In fact, no matter what song you listen to, little tricks hold your attention. Be it the subtle electronics on \u2018<em>Solway Firth<\/em>\u2019 or the guitar licks on \u2018<em>Not long For This World<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, overall this album feels oddly restrained. The heavier songs are straight-up <strong>Slipknot<\/strong>, but there are none of the daring missteps of \u2018<em>All Hope Is Gone<\/em>\u2019. \u00a0Notably, when Corey Taylor starts spitting verses on \u2018<em>Nero Forte,<\/em>\u2019 it verges on being self-parody. Effective, yes, but strangely old-school. Hinting it\u2019s too safe for its own good.<\/p>\n<p>Missing the dark malevolent edge and sharper corners, \u2018<em>We Are Not Your Kind<\/em>\u2019 is still an excellent record. <strong>Slipknot<\/strong> have never sounded so accessible or sure of themselves.
