With the majority of the band approaching their 50s, recording took place in a relaxed manner, and you can tell. It\u2019s a comfortable album, but it\u2019s laced with a real sense of fun.<\/p>\n<p>Having reunited with multi-instrumentalist Franz Nicolay, it\u2019s their first album as a six-piece. Allowing a very fleshed-out sound. Notably, it\u2019s less guitar-led. Instead, they use riffs and licks to add a mischievous air, especially on songs such as \u2018<em>Epaulets<\/em>\u2019 and \u2018<em>Entitlement Crew<\/em>\u2019. Although a horn section might sound like overkill, it gives \u2018<em>Traditional Village<\/em>\u2019 a very different feel and works surprisingly well. They use a similar trick to energise \u2018<em>T-Shirt Tux<\/em>\u2019, which is sure to have you dancing in the aisles.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The Hold Steady - You Did Good Kid\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P-aRAhigP1I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This time around Craig Finn\u2019s sing-talking vocal style feels effortless.\u00a0 He disguises obvious rhymes artfully on \u2018<em>Entitlement Crew<\/em>\u2019 and wrings out real emotional during the laid-back, quiet contemplation of \u2018<em>Blackout Sam<\/em>\u2019. His credentials as a storyteller are on top form too. Nowhere more so than the heavily sneered \u2018<em>Star 18<\/em>\u2019. It\u2019s wonderfully verbose and feels like a classic. Yet, it fits comfortably with the band\u2019s more relaxed sound, making the most of the guitars without being an outright rocker. It pushes a strong Springsteen vibe to the forefront.<\/p>\n<p>However, being a sextet can make songs feel bloated; \u2018<em>Denver Haircut<\/em>\u2019 starts like a queue of people trying to get out of a train carriage. Yet, when they strip things back, each instrument has little space to breathe and add its distinct footprint. This makes \u2018<em>You Did Good Kid<\/em>\u2019 and \u2018<em>The Stove &amp; The Toaster<\/em>\u2019 highlights and \u2018<em>Confusion In The Marketplace<\/em>\u2019 something of a masterpiece.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em>Thrashing Thru The Passion<\/em>\u2019 is <strong>The Hold Steady<\/strong> making music their way, for their enjoyment.
