In the ironic wake of \u2018Skydancer\u2019<\/i>, In Hearts Wake<\/b> make their Download debut on the crest of a wave. Following 2014\u2019s \u2018Earthwalker\u2019<\/i> with its lofty other half, transforming metalcore into a larger-than-life conceptual venture has come naturally to the boys from Byron Bay, Austrlia.<\/p>\n

Following their Maverick stage opener, Already Heard<\/b> caught a few minutes with guitarist Eaven Dall and bassist and clean vocalist Kyle Erich to talk Australian bands, the influences behind their game-changing ideas and what they see in the band\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

AH: Hey guys, how\u2019re you doing today?<\/b>
Kyle Erich: Awesome! <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven Dall: A little sniffly, I\u2019m a little bit sick, under the weather, but I\u2019m okay. <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: How\u2019s it feel being in the European home of rock and metal for the first time? <\/b>
Kyle: Awesome! We\u2019re psyched to be here at Download, it\u2019s fun! <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: We\u2019ve been hearing about it for so long and we finally get to play it, it\u2019s awesome. <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: I was just talking to some others about it too, you guys don\u2019t get many platforms like this in Australia, do you? <\/b>
Kyle: Well we have Soundwave\u2026 that\u2019s it! Download\u2019s the closest thing to it and there was one called Big Day Out, but that\u2019s gone now. <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: Soundwave is great fun though, but nowhere near the magnitude of this! <\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: This one\u2019s pretty safe! <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: Sorry about the rain though! <\/b>
Kyle: Well apparently it\u2019s not Download if it doesn\u2019t rain… <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: I\u2019ve been told it\u2019s called Drownload? Downpour, all those bad jokes! <\/i><\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

AH: Now your set this morning was incredible, not just because of the crowd you brought in from the rain, but what advice would you give to a first time festivalgoer? <\/b>
Kyle: Well we were first time Download festival-goers! Have fun I guess! <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: We\u2019re still trying to figure that one out! <\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: Umm, bring a poncho? We\u2019ve had a couple of drinks, we\u2019re hanging out now, it\u2019s a good atmosphere. Just soak it in, enjoy it, it\u2019s a festival, anything goes, keep it real! <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: Yeah, we\u2019ll probably go and have a wander around in a bit. <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: You guys looking to catch anyone else on the bill today? <\/b>
Eaven: We\u2019re playing in France tomorrow so unfortunately we\u2019re not gonna be around for Muse. I\u2019d really like to see Muse, I\u2019ve heard they\u2019re fantastic live. <\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: Faith No More, I\u2019d love to see them. And our friends Northlane, Hands Like Houses! <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: Yeah, we\u2019ll stick around for those. <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: You Australian guys keep a tight ship, you stick together! <\/b>
Kyle: Everyone knows each other! <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: Yeah, well in Australia, the population\u2019s not that big so\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: We literally turned up here at Download yesterday, walked in and ran into Hands Like Houses, Northlane, all of that lot! <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: Yeah, all of a sudden it was just \u201cboom!\u201d all in one place! <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: So let\u2019s talk about \u2018Skydancer\u2019<\/i> then, it\u2019s a really fitting follow-up to \u2018Earthwalker\u2019<\/i>, the tracks merge together so well. How do you keep up that continuity in a two-parter? <\/b>
Kyle: Well when we wrote it and recorded it, it was meant to be a continuation from \u2018Earthwalker\u2019. I\u2019m glad you\u2019ve taken that from it because that\u2019s what it was always meant to be, it\u2019s two different sides to a story. <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: But it\u2019s all part of the same thing. <\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: It\u2019s nice to have it all out because it was great having \u2018Earthwalker\u2019 out, but now the whole story\u2019s out, we\u2019re just stoked that it\u2019s all out there for people. <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: It was hard keeping it a secret as well. I told my parents and a few people but that\u2019s it. <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: It\u2019s a testament to you guys that you\u2019re doing what you love, you\u2019re not following trends. <\/b>
Kyle: Well it\u2019s always been about the music, for me! <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: Even that title track was the real kick this genre needed. Are you aiming for world domination, changing the genre? <\/b>
Eaven: We just wanna spread our message really. <\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: I honestly don\u2019t think we can write something that we think is gonna be awesome, we try to write something that we enjoy listening to and we enjoy playing, so whatever comes of that, comes of that. You can\u2019t really do too much about that. I wouldn\u2019t wanna hate what I do just to make money. <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: Yeah, it doesn\u2019t become fun, we\u2019re all friends travelling the world with each other playing the music we enjoy listening to. It\u2019s a good deal! Best job I ever had! <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: What\u2019s your view on Gene Simmons\u2019 comments that rock is dead? <\/b>
Kyle: He doesn\u2019t know what he\u2019s talking about! He\u2019s here somewhere, I\u2019m gonna have to find him, let him know that it\u2019s still going! <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: Metal\u2019s evolving, some people are stuck in their ways. <\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: I do like KISS, I\u2019m disappointed to hear that, Gene\u2026 I\u2019ll forgive you because you\u2019re a legend! Maybe that means the next album\u2019s gonna be pop, if they have one. <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: If you could bring any band on tour with you, supporting you or headlining over you, who would you bring along? <\/b>
Eaven: I\u2019d probably just say our mates! Northlane boys or something like that! <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: Anyone you\u2019d bring back from the dead? <\/b>
Eaven: Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye! <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: So we know a setlist will never please everyone because things get missed out. What\u2019s one track you wish would make a setlist? <\/b>
Kyle: I really like \u2018Winterfell\u2019 from \u2018Divination\u2019, I feel like it\u2019s probably never going to make it again. Now that we\u2019ve got two albums out after it, is it gonna make it? <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: Maybe on the ten year anniversary! <\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: I mean, if all of our fans really want it and came to us with a load of\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: Like the horde from the north! <\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: Yeah, you\u2019ve gotta play your singles and stuff you made for music videos. <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: It\u2019s tough as well because we were quite young when we wrote and recorded that and as you grow up, naturally your music progresses as well. So you want to put your best foot forward by putting out newer songs and the ones we feel strongly about. <\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: We love it though. <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: I thoroughly enjoy that song. <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: In that case, if you could go back to any one of your albums to re-record things, which would you revisit? <\/b>
Kyle: \u2018The Gateway\u2019! Back in the day\u2026 I wasn\u2019t even on it, but I\u2019d do it again, bring it back! <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: We were like sixteen when we did that. We were still in school when we did that. <\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: I wasn\u2019t even in the band! <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: That must\u2019ve been a strange situation to record in, given you were in school, you don\u2019t even know yourself at that age, do you? <\/b>
Eaven: Yeah, you\u2019re so influenced by your peers. <\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: Yeah, As I Lay Dying had nothing to do with that record at all\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

AH: Who was your most crucial musical influence growing up? <\/b>
Kyle: I think the first song I ever played live was Rage Against The Machine \u2013 Killing In The Name. That\u2019s the first time I ever sang anything live. Everyone starts playing covers, but that was one of my favourite moments as a musician. <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: I was more into heavier things like Underoath, so I\u2019d have to go with them. <\/i><\/p>\n

AH: If there\u2019s one venue you still haven\u2019t played yet, where would you most like to play? <\/b>
Kyle: Wembley Stadium! That\u2019d be nice! <\/i><\/p>\n

Eaven: Or the Pavilion in Australia. <\/i><\/p>\n

Kyle: We kind of played a venue recently that was like a big deal for us. The Roundhouse in Sydney. That would\u2019ve been our answer up until about a month ago. There\u2019s this venue in America called Chain Reaction, there\u2019s a lot of history at that place so that\u2019d be a cool place to play, I\u2019ve seen a lot of videos of bands playing live, I\u2019d love to play out there. <\/i><\/p>\n
