Now as they return with\u00a0<em>\u2018No Joy\u2019<\/em>, this next evolution of\u00a0<strong>Spanish Love Songs<\/strong>\u00a0is one that is optimistic and melancholy.<\/p>\n<p>On the surface, this sounds like a different\u00a0<strong>Spanish Love<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Songs<\/strong>. Where previously anthemic punk rock was prioritised, the aforementioned\u00a0<em>\u2018Brave Faces, Etc\u2019<\/em>\u00a0has opened the door that leans towards alt and indie rock, yet the \u201cdoom and gloom\u201d lyricism remains intact. Early tracks such as\u00a0<em>\u2018Haunted\u2019<\/em>\u00a0with its 80\u2019s synth glaze are opposed by tales of\u00a0<em>\u201canother body in the McDonald\u2019s parking lot\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and a reminder\u00a0<em>\u201cit\u2019ll be this bleak forever\u201d<\/em>. However, vocalist and guitarist\u00a0Dylan Slocum has, to an extent, turned the corner offering a bit of hope throughout.<\/p>\n<p>As a lyricist, he continues to be a vital, on-point asset to\u00a0<strong>Spanish Love<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Songs<\/strong>, bringing a dark, poetic quality. On the atmospheric\u00a0<em>\u2018Middle of Nine\u2019<\/em>\u00a0he serves up impactful lines like \u201c<em>That black hole ate all of your serotonin, and no one asks why you\u2019re ready to go,<\/em>\u201d while remembering his late grandmother.\u00a0<em>\u2018I\u2019m Gonna Miss Everything\u2019<\/em>\u00a0recalls the anxiety of being suicidal, yet a drop of hope in still being here a\u00a0<em>\u201cdecade since\u201d<\/em>. Whereas\u00a0<em>\u2018Rapture Chaser\u2019<\/em>\u00a0accepts that\u00a0<em>\u201cThe pain is everywhere\u201d<\/em>\u00a0amongst a sea of dizzying keys courtesy of\u00a0Meredith Van Woert.<\/p>\n<p>Without a doubt, her contributions are more substantial than previous\u00a0<strong>SLS<\/strong>\u00a0releases. Throughout, she provides a glimmer of hope. Whether that\u2019s on stirring swells on the tender\u00a0<em>\u2018Exit Bags\u2019\u00a0<\/em>or the sprinkling melodies on\u00a0<em>\u2018Marvel<\/em>\u2018.\u00a0While on \u2018<em>Clean Up Crew\u2019<\/em>, she combines with bassist Trevor Dietrich, and drummer Ruben Duarte to create a rigid groove, exemplifying the broader sounds\u00a0<em>\u2018No Joy\u2019<\/em>\u00a0offers.\u00a0Slocum and Kyle McAulay\u2019s guitar work is lighter and less dependent on explosive punk;\u00a0<em>\u2018Pendulum\u2019<\/em>\u00a0is led by twinkling acoustics, drifting chords, and a sturdy rhythm. Although some songs lack a lasting impact when alone, when threaded together they create a captivating narrative that equally keeps in line with\u00a0<strong>SLS\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0downbeat lyricism. However, it\u2019s evolved past the point that everything is shit.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Re-Emerging Signs of the Apocalypse\u2019\u00a0<\/em>brings it all to a head. Van Woert\u2019s synth keys dominate the verses, adding to the lyrical tension of personal and socio-political distress, segueing into a radiant, guitar-driven finale of acceptance \u2013\u00a0<em>\u201cwe\u2019re a part of the equation\u201d<\/em>.
