However, you can only do with what you get given. But don&#8217;t fret, this week&#8217;s #<strong>NewMusicFriday\u00a0<\/strong>isn&#8217;t a complete write-off.<\/p>\n<p>For starters, there&#8217;s <em>&#8216;Ceremonia&#8217;<\/em>, the impressive new record from post-rockers turned grungy alt-rock noise makers <strong>Blanket<\/strong>. Their third full-length sees the North West quartet thrive off a wall of distortion, yet retain the mellow elegance of past releases. Whereas shoegaze specialist <strong>Newmoon<\/strong>, also drop their third album (<em>&#8216;Temporary Light&#8217;)<\/em>. You can read my thoughts on both of these releases below.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable releases out today include\u00a0<strong>The Gaslight Anthem\u00a0<\/strong>sharing some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/the-gaslight-anthem-confirm-history-books-short-stories-ep-release\/\"><em>&#8216;Short Stories&#8217;<\/em><\/a> to accompany last year&#8217;s\u00a0<em>&#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-the-gaslight-anthem-history-books\/\">History Books&#8217;<\/a><\/em> album.\u00a0Heavy as f*ck specialist <strong>Mastiff<\/strong> delivers their latest intense opus in the form of <em>&#8216;Deprecipice&#8217;<\/em>.\u00a0Slacker pop-rock songstress\u00a0<strong>Lauran Hibberd<\/strong> releases her sophomore effort,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Girlfriend Material&#8217;<\/em>. While\u00a0<strong>Lil Lotus<\/strong> puts out a deluxe edition of\u00a0<em>&#8216;Nosebleeder&#8217;<\/em>, less than six months on from <a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/newmusicfriday-december-1st-2023\/#:~:text=Credit%3A%20Rowan%20Daly-,Lil%20Lotus%20%E2%80%93%20Nosebleeder,-Much%20like%20Machine\">its initial relaese<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As for up-and-coming names, anthemic synth-rockers <strong>Crushed By Waves<\/strong> look to leave their mark with their debut album &#8211; <em>&#8216;More To Life&#8217;<\/em>. Whereas\u00a0<strong>Avralize<\/strong> shows why Germany continues to thrive in the modern metalcore scene, although their first full-length, <em>&#8216;Freaks&#8217;,\u00a0<\/em>treads in all too familiar territory.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a darker take on metalcore, there&#8217;s\u00a0<em>&#8216;Hollywood Suicide&#8217;<\/em> from fellow Germans\u00a0<strong>GH\u00d8STKID<\/strong>. Fronted by Sebastian \u201cSushi\u201d Biesler (ex-Electric Callboy), the album takes a conceptual route as an artist changes Stateside success yet gets caught up in the sacrifices you have to make.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there are new releases from\u00a0<strong>The K&#8217;s<\/strong>, <strong>Artificial Language,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>standards<\/strong>, <strong>Rory Ryan<\/strong>, and more.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"blanket\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-95331\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Blanket_TAS_July-11-1000x667.jpg\" alt=\"Blanket\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Blanket_TAS_July-11-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Blanket_TAS_July-11-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Blanket_TAS_July-11-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Blanket_TAS_July-11-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Blanket_TAS_July-11.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Blanket &#8211; Ceremonia<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re like me, then you&#8217;ll remember\u00a0<strong>Blanket<\/strong> for their atmospheric brand of cinematic post-rock. Yet the band that you hear on\u00a0<em>&#8216;Ceremonia&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>isn&#8217;t a complete stylistic 180\u00b0. 2021&#8217;s &#8216;<em>Modern Escapism&#8217;<\/em> allowed them to evolve into shoegaze territory organically. <em>&#8216;Ceremonia&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>sees\u00a0<strong>Blanket<\/strong> sonically explode, cranking up the guitars, with songs drenched (mostly) in urgency.<\/p>\n<p>Going into the making of the album, the band aimed to sound like an indie band but louder. It&#8217;s safe to say off the back of tracks such as <em>&#8216;Nuclear Boy Scout&#8217;<\/em> and\u00a0<em>&#8216;Kaleidoscope&#8217;<\/em>,\u00a0<strong>Blanket<\/strong> have certainly achieved what they set out to do.\u00a0On the former, guitars whirl away as Bobby Hook&#8217;s melodic words provide a hypnotic contrast. While Aiden Baldwin (drums) and Matthew Sheldon (bass) provide the track&#8217;s heavy spine.\u00a0<em>&#8216;Kaleidoscope&#8217;<\/em> neatly combines striking distortion with a subtly swirling atmosphere. Its execution is brash, colourful, and addictive.<\/p>\n<p>However, as you&#8217;re riding a euphoric high, &#8216;<em>Sea of Bliss (reprise)&#8217;<\/em> momentarily brings you back down with a raw, piano-led interlude, teasing you for what&#8217;s to come later on. With that being\u00a0<em>&#8216;Sea of Bliss&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>itself. Shimmering with a cinematic quality, it dives into a soaring pool of post-rock that truly sounds massive.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout\u00a0<em>&#8216;Ceremonia&#8217;<\/em>, there are examples of\u00a0<strong>Blanket<\/strong>&#8216;s versatility. Whether that that be on how\u00a0<em>&#8216;Porcelain&#8217; <\/em>beautifully sinks into serene shoegaze territory with glistening guitars, before giving way to swirling grunge and a bouncing melody. Or how <em>&#8216;Loom&#8217;<\/em> captures\u00a0<strong>Blanket<\/strong> at their most ferocious, producing an explosive wall of noise as Hook&#8217;s screams segue into screeching guitars. Yet it&#8217;s shrouded in a shoegaze skin that draws you in through its subtle dynamism. While its title track is an unrelenting blast of grunge rock.<\/p>\n<p>Later on, &#8216;The<em> Lucky Ones&#8217;<\/em> is another example of <strong>Blanket<\/strong> pairing BritPop melodies with alt-rock guitars. Musically dense, it&#8217;s complemented by dreamy melodies. Whereas the penultimate track, <em>&#8216;Euphoria&#8217;<\/em> rides on a rigid bass line before an emotive chorus, reminiscent of Northern Ireland trio Ash, shines through. <em>&#8216;Final Call&#8217;<\/em> is ideally cold, brooding away as it intensely draws you in as <strong>Blanket<\/strong>&#8216;s layered instrumentation swells in and out.<\/p>\n<p>Considerably,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Ceremonia&#8217;<\/em> is the most cohesive full-length <strong>Blanket<\/strong> have put out to date. It&#8217;s anchored by a lyrically emotional weight that&#8217;s clouded in distortion and wistful melodies. When it&#8217;s all tied together, you realise the North West four-piece has delivered an album that is hard to ignore. Sure, there are plenty of others utilising the shoegaze\/grunge style right now, but very few, if any, sound as accomplished as <strong>Blanket<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"newmoon\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-95147\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/NewMoon.jpg\" alt=\"NewMoon\" width=\"878\" height=\"464\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/NewMoon.jpg 878w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/NewMoon-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/NewMoon-768x406.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 878px) 100vw, 878px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>Newmoon &#8211; Temporary Light<\/h2>\n<p>For Belgian outfit\u00a0<strong>Newmoon<\/strong>, creating atmosphere is the name of the game. <em>&#8216;Temporary Light&#8217;<\/em>, their third full-length, embarks on winning listeners with an ethereal mix of post-rock and shoegaze.<\/p>\n<p>Having been on the receiving end of comparisons to the influential Slowdive one too many times, <em>&#8216;Temporary Light&#8217;<\/em> sees the Antwerp band do their best to step away from said comparisons. <a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/song-of-the-day-newmoon-crazing\/\">Previous &#8220;Song of the Day&#8221; pick<\/a>,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Crazing&#8217;<\/em>, exemplifies\u00a0<strong>Newmoon<\/strong>&#8216;s layered tendencies with nuanced heavy flashes. Likewise,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Sense of Longing&#8217;<\/em> opens with a burst of urgency before settling into atmospheric vocals and dynamic percussion with ringing guitars.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless,\u00a0<strong>Newmoon<\/strong> are a shoegaze band. You just have to hear the opening pairing of <em>&#8216;Eternal Fall&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>&#8216;Still&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>to hear how comfortable they are being drenched in FX pedals etc. This isn&#8217;t a criticism on what <strong>Newmoon<\/strong> do, as the glacial\u00a0<em>&#8216;Through The Glass&#8217;<\/em> shows, they&#8217;ve executed it to near perfection. The latter is an album highlight due to its steady tempo, and their ability to combine it with post-rock guitars and Bert Cannaerts&#8217; distant vocals.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, a little variation would be welcomed yet as\u00a0<em>&#8216;Fading Phase&#8217;<\/em> and\u00a0<em>&#8216;Luminal People&#8217; <\/em>demonstrate,\u00a0<strong>Newmoon\u00a0<\/strong>tend to draw you in through their dreamy soundscapes.
