Songs (2020 &#8211; 2023)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#deathlens\">Death Lens &#8211; Cold World <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#list\">What is out on this #NewMusicFriday?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#playlist\">Take me to the Playlist<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>The first <b>#NewMusicFriday<\/b> of the month sees another wealth of albums and EP&#8217;s released.<\/p>\n<p>For starters, <strong>Frank Turne<\/strong>r delivers his 10th album,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Undefeated&#8217;<\/em>. After a few less-than-well-received outings, Turner aims to show determination while maintaining his punk-fueled singer-songwriter persona. Likewise,\u00a0<strong>P.O.D.\u00a0<\/strong>aim to prove doubters wrong with\u00a0<em>&#8216;Veritas&#8217;<\/em>. While there is little evolution from their tried-and-tested blend of rap-rock, alt-metal, and reggae rock, songs like\u00a0<em>&#8216;Afraid To Die&#8217;<\/em> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/song-of-the-day-pod-lies-we-tell-ourselves\/\"><em>&#8216;Lies We Tell Ourselves&#8217;<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/song-of-the-day-pod-lies-we-tell-ourselves\/\">\u00a0<\/a> have another heftiness to satisfy you.\u00a0<i><\/i>Elsewhere,\u00a0<strong>Into It. Over It. <\/strong>share a collection of tracks recorded and released over the past three years.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to emerging acts, this week sees the likes of\u00a0<strong>Marisa And The Moths<\/strong>, French pop-rockers\u00a0<strong>OAKMAN<\/strong>, Edinburgh indie\/alt-rock\u00a0<strong>Daytime TV<\/strong>, and favourable Newcastle indie-punks\u00a0<strong>Fast Blood\u00a0<\/strong>all deliver new releases.\u00a0While\u00a0<em>&#8216;Cold World&#8217;<\/em> by <strong>Death Lens<\/strong> isn&#8217;t one to be ignored.<\/p>\n<p>There are also releases from\u00a0<strong>Mammoth Penguins<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Wheel<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>The Karma Effect<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Girls In Synthesis<\/strong>, and more.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"iioi\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-95854\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IIOI-1000x666.jpg\" alt=\"Into it Over It\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IIOI-1000x666.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IIOI-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IIOI-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/IIOI.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Into It. Over It. &#8211; Interesting Decisions: Into It. Over It. Songs (2020 &#8211; 2023)<\/h2>\n<p>Pulling together songs from numerous splits, along with three new cuts,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Interesting Decisions&#8217;<\/em> sees\u00a0<strong>Into It. Over<\/strong> <strong>It.\u00a0<\/strong>make a welcomed return. With a revamped line-up, this is far from a hodgepodge of cuts from splits, one-offs, etc.<\/p>\n<p>For starters, there&#8217;s the comforting cadence of Evan Weiss&#8217; voice. Ever the reliable storyteller, songs like &#8216;<em>A Trip Around The Sun&#8217; <\/em>and<em>&#8216;My Goddamn Subconscious&#8217; <\/em>quickly offer a familiarity to Weiss&#8217; introspective, thoughtful songwriting. However, with the addition of guitarist Joe George, drummer Adam Beck, and bassist Matthew Frank, they&#8217;ve collectively expanded\u00a0<strong>IIOI<\/strong>&#8216;s pallet of sounds.<\/p>\n<p>Whether that be the dizzying fretboard playing on <em>&#8216;The Focus. The Compass. The Contract In Hand.&#8217;<\/em>, the\u00a0loose bounce of\u00a0<em>&#8216;My Goddamn Subconscious&#8217;,\u00a0<\/em>or the colourful dry percussion of <em>&#8216;The Car&#8217;s Still Running Out Front&#8217;,<\/em> there&#8217;s a unity between the quartet. It allows\u00a0<strong>IIOI<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>to add intriguing layers that go beyond Weiss&#8217; tried-and-tested indie\/emo formula. Take <em>&#8216;The Captain Setting Course From Where We Met&#8217;<\/em> for example, George&#8217;s guitar goes from ringing harmonies to math-rock-like pluckiness, all the while Beck&#8217;s rapid tapping drums do their best to deter from his bandmate&#8217;s dizzying steady pacing. Elsewhere,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Bandelier&#8217;,<\/em> one of three new songs (along with &#8216;<em>A Trip Around The Sun&#8217;<\/em>), is tonally warm and rich, momentarily honing in on soothing harmonies before exploding with a colourful wall of sound.<\/p>\n<p>Even though this isn&#8217;t an entirely a set of new\u00a0<strong>Into It. Over It.\u00a0<\/strong>songs,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Interesting Decisions&#8217;<\/em> is still a worthwhile record. It&#8217;s a reminder of Weiss&#8217; songwriting ability and is complemented by an evolving sound. It&#8217;s one that thankfully never strays too far from what we&#8217;ve come to expect from the project. It&#8217;s no surprise that their\u00a0<strong>Epitaph Records<\/strong> debut,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Cold World&#8217;<\/em>, is a fist-pumping collection of punk-angst hardcore.<\/p>\n<p>Straight out of the gate,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Fucked Up&#8217; <\/em>and <em>&#8216;Disturb The Peace&#8217; <\/em>explodes with a free-spirited vibrancy, partly due to Bryan Torres&#8217; fitting vocal style. From hearing the opening handful of tracks, there&#8217;s really no gimmick to\u00a0<strong>Death Lens<\/strong>, just good modern punk songs delivered with an abundance of energy.\u00a0<em>&#8216;Limousine&#8217;<\/em> injects some post-punk intensity into proceedings with rigid guitars. Whereas\u00a0<em>&#8216;Nothing&#8217;s Forever&#8217;<\/em> considerably sounds bigger than it has any right to be, partly thanks to Tony Rangel&#8217;s drum work.<\/p>\n<p>Aided by the production work of Brett Romnes (Hot Mulligan, Mom Jeans), tracks like\u00a0<em>&#8216;Vacant&#8217;<\/em> and\u00a0<em>&#8216;Memory Hotline&#8217;<\/em> take advantage sonically. On the latter, it bounces with a fuzzy groove yet never detracts from Torres&#8217; words about missing <em>&#8220;the good ol&#8217; days&#8221;<\/em><em>. <\/em><em>&#8216;Cold World<\/em>&#8216;s exemplifies this further through Jhon Reyes and Matt Silva&#8217;s swirling guitars and Eduardo Contreras&#8217;s rumbling bass lines.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, there is plenty of lyrical substance to\u00a0<strong>Death Lens<\/strong>. The aforementioned <em>&#8216;Limousine&#8217;<\/em> takes aim at the wealthy and smug politicians.\u00a0<em>&#8216;Vacant&#8217;<\/em> sees Torres fight with sobriety, trying to find a purpose, and <em>&#8216;Not Enough&#8217;<\/em> counters with defiance, claiming he&#8217;s <em>&#8220;not the problem, he&#8217;s trying to solve it.&#8221;<\/em> &#8216;<em>Lo Que Sera&#8217; <\/em>ends the album on a succulent, ballad-like note with sweeping strings and acoustic guitars, signalling some form of comfort for Torres and the\u00a0<em>&#8220;war inside his head&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Death Lens<\/strong>&#8216; self-loathing message doesn&#8217;t beat down the musical muscle that\u00a0<em>&#8216;Cold World&#8217;<\/em> provides. Their intent is to tell their story of hardship, and it&#8217;s one they achieve to do.
