For those old-school rockers, <strong>Bon Jovi<\/strong> follow up their <em>&#8216;Thank You, Goodnight&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>documentary series with\u00a0<em>&#8216;Forever&#8217;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian pop-rocker\u00a0<strong>L\u00d8L\u00d8\u00a0<\/strong>aims to stand out from the pack with her personal and relatable debut outing;\u00a0<em>&#8216;falling for robots and wishing i was on&#8217;<\/em>. Her fellow Canadians,\u00a0<strong>Rarity<\/strong> continue to balance the fine line between hardcore and pop-punk on third album,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Lower Feeling&#8217;<\/em>, with admirable results. On the surface, they&#8217;re all fairly interchangeable and lack any staying power.\u00a0 <strong>L\u00d8L\u00d8<\/strong>&#8216;s debut full-length offering, <em>&#8216;falling for robots and wishing i was one&#8217;<\/em>, wrestles with adolescence, capturing the feeling of being in your mid-20&#8217;s and going through break-ups and dealing with mental health issues. It&#8217;s set up to be all very relatable, yet considerably removes any notion of personality.<\/p>\n<p>Early cuts such as <em>&#8216;omg&#8217;<\/em> and\u00a0<em>&#8216;facepaint&#8217;<\/em> are punchy, setting the lyrical tone for the remainder. Yet at 15 songs deep, the narrative of&#8221;&#8216;troubled girl in distress&#8221; soon wears thin.\u00a0<em>&#8216;poser&#8217;<\/em> offers one of the few highlights, comfortably leaning towards the pop side of the spectrum amid angst-laden words of\u00a0<em>&#8220;You never loved me you fucking poser, Was it only ever just for the sex?&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As evident on <em>&#8216;wish I was a robot&#8217;<\/em> and &#8216;<em>suck it up&#8217;<\/em>, <strong>L\u00d8L\u00d8<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>is capable of delivering catchy songs. Yet while the choruses serve up favourable melodies, they rarely provide <strong>L\u00d8L\u00d8<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>with a distinct personality. Her carefree delivery on tracks such as\u00a0<em>&#8216;hot girls in hell&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0questionably removes any possibility of a notable impact. The hooks are there, but it all been done before.<\/p>\n<p>When she&#8217;s not exploring light pop-rock, <strong>L\u00d8L\u00d8<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>is honing in on raw ballad territory. &#8216;<em>snow in berlin&#8217;<\/em> and<em> &#8216;thoughts in the shower&#8217;<\/em> are stripped-back and allows her to show some effective vulnerability.\u00a0<em>&#8216;i would fix u if i could&#8217;<\/em> embraces a sedated ballad tone as <strong>L\u00d8L\u00d8<\/strong> &#8216;s sings of being unable to make the &#8220;bad boy&#8221; become good. Maybe it&#8217;s their execution, or the lightweight production utilised, but when\u00a0<strong>L\u00d8L\u00d8<\/strong>\u00a0slows things down, she comes off as more genuine and personable.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for <strong>L\u00d8L\u00d8<\/strong>, <em>&#8216;falling for robots and wishing i was one&#8217;<\/em> consists of more forgettable moments, drenched in frothy pop-rock with an emotional narrative that rarely achieves what it aims to deliver.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Origins-Nordic-Giants-copy-1000x605.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"484\" id=\"nordicgiants\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-96368\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Origins-Nordic-Giants-copy-1000x605.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Origins-Nordic-Giants-copy-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Origins-Nordic-Giants-copy-768x464.jpg 768w, https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Origins-Nordic-Giants-copy.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Nordic Giants &#8211; Origins<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s always exciting when the enigmatic duo known as <strong>Nordic Giants<\/strong> releases new music, even if this compilation pulls together from their first three releases. Nevertheless, the material lifted from the <em>&#8216;A Tree As Old As Me<\/em>&#8216; EP, along with early singles <em>&#8216;Speed the Crows Nest&#8217;<\/em> and <em>&#8216;Shine&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>still captures the beauty and pure essence of &#8220;R\u00f4ka&#8221; and &#8220;L\u00f6ki&#8221;.\u00a0Furthermore, many of the instrumentation has been re-recorded, re-mixed, and re-mastered, injecting new life into these decade-old tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout their discography, the instrumental pairing have continuously provided an ambient and rich sound that is simply immersive.\u00a0<em>&#8216;Origins&#8217;<\/em> is no different. This is considerably expanded on the occasional guest vocal utilised. Whether that&#8217;s Freyja&#8217;s angelic harmonies on\u00a0<em>&#8216;Glass Skinned Girl&#8217;<\/em>, Cate Ferris&#8217; earthly voice complementing\u00a0<em>&#8216;Shine&#8217;<\/em>s twinkling keys, or Jake Reed&#8217;s intense-building words on <em>&#8216;The Seed&#8217;<\/em>. They all effortlessly complement\u00a0<strong>Nordic Giants<\/strong>&#8216; cinematic post-rock sound.<\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s the final guest spot from Amdine that captures how perfect\u00a0<strong>Nordic Giants<\/strong> can utilise vocals.\u00a0<em>&#8216;B.O.A.T.S&#8217; <\/em>is an awe-inspiring and mesmerising penultimate offering. Having crafted a visually captivating show, on record\u00a0<strong>Nordic Giants<\/strong> can easily be as beguiling. Here\u00a0sweeping strings, R\u00e2ka&#8217;s distant drums, and L\u00f6ki&#8217;s alluring piano keys complement Amdine&#8217;s heavenly tongue.<\/p>\n<p>Another impressive trait of <strong>Nordic Giants\u00a0<\/strong>is their use of samples.\u00a0<em>&#8216;Origins&#8217;<\/em> is bookended by two numbers that do just this. First\u00a0<em>&#8216;Together&#8217;<\/em> uses Martin Luther King Jr.&#8217;s\u00a0<em>&#8220;Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence&#8221;<\/em> speech, providing a thought-provoking narrative to the duo&#8217;s atmospheric soundtrack.\u00a0A reworked version of <em>&#8216;Dark Clouds Mean War&#8217;<\/em> closes the compilation. While the original was entirely instrumental, this version adds Rod Steiger rousing performance as Emperor Napoleon I from the 1970 film, <em>&#8216;Waterloo&#8217;<\/em>. His departing words bring a sense of closure, honing in on the emotional pull that\u00a0<strong>Nordic Giants<\/strong> can conjure up. Musically, R\u00e2ka and L\u00f6ki go from delicate pianos to brooding low-end drums to striking synths, structurally keeping listeners enthralled. As mournful synths and ringing cymbals ease off into the distance, you realise the mysterious pair have taken you on a musical journey.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you&#8217;re familiar with\u00a0<strong>Nordic Giants<\/strong> or discovering them for the first time,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Origins&#8217;<\/em> is an ideal starting point. Its eight tracks capture their musical blueprint beautifully. For example, listening to the triumphant horn of\u00a0<em>&#8216;Through a Lens Darkly&#8217;<\/em> lends itself to the ambient richness heard in later material. Both <strong>Wimp<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>prom<\/strong> emerge from it to deliver this split EP. I&#8217;ll admit the blend of emo, hardcore and shoegaze is quickly becoming pretty commonplace, yet it&#8217;s a style that I&#8217;m always willing to give a chance.<\/p>\n<p>Emo-grunge quartet\u00a0<strong>Wimp<\/strong>&#8216;s serve up\u00a0<em>&#8216;Shelter&#8217;<\/em> and\u00a0<em>&#8216;Kiss The World&#8217;<\/em>. The former firmly sits in the grunge space with a wall of distortion and muted verses. Whereas the latter hints at a more melodic side before erupting with a punk-fueled tempo. Yet as the track eases off, the use of duel vocals allows\u00a0<strong>Wimp<\/strong> to show they&#8217;re more than distortion fiends. As subtle guitar harmonies ring out, hints of shoegaze pour in.<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0<strong>prom<\/strong>, the pairing of <em>&#8216;Come Undone&#8217;<\/em> and\u00a0<em>&#8216;Frail Hands&#8217;<\/em> allows them to showcase their versatility.\u00a0<em>&#8216;Come Undone&#8217;<\/em> is a short, sharp, and raucous blast of emo hardcore reminiscent of Title Fight. In contrast, &#8216;<em>Frail Hands&#8217;<\/em> drifts along, wrapped in comforting shoegaze before a change of pace threatens to crash the train off the tracks. Thankfully, its conclusion is controlled and stirring, just about leaving you wanting more.<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not split releases have any impact is debatable. However, for bands like <strong>Wimp<\/strong> and <strong>prom<\/strong>, they continue to be an avenue to get their music heard, no matter how big or small an audience hears them.
