On his debut album,\u00a0‘Wasteland’<\/em>, multi-instrumentalist\u00a0Jaws The Shark\u00a0<\/strong>(aka Olly Bailey) explores various shades of the rock spectrum. For example, lead single\u00a0‘California’<\/em><\/a> is a fuzz-laden earworm. Its title track rumbles with a carefree punk spirit whereas\u00a0‘Got It Made’<\/em> offers up some gritty riffs. Moving on there are flashes of grunge (‘Lately’), <\/em>and sombre country (‘Last Train To Santa Fe’<\/em>), before\u00a0‘Rejoice or Pray’<\/em> reigns things. Its atmospheric presentation sees Bailey explore a failed relationship with religious connotations.<\/em> It’s quickly followed up by the equally reflective ‘Nothing Lasts’<\/em>, embracing harmonious, soft indie rock in the process.<\/p>\n

Throughout its ten tracks,\u00a0Jaws The Shark<\/strong> isn’t afraid to take chances and his delivery is assured constantly. Its later moments emphasise this as ‘Summer Puddle’\u00a0<\/em>is executed with plenty of charisma, and\u00a0‘End of an Era’<\/em>s bass line throbs under the weight of anthemic punk. And while its title suggests Bailey is living in a “wasteland”<\/em>, its finale,\u00a0‘Just Popping Out For Forever’<\/em>, gives the impression he’s content where he is.\u00a0If anything, Jaws The Shark<\/strong>, delivers a cohesive album with a personal narrative, fuelled by internal and external pressures.<\/p>\n

Without a doubt,\u00a0‘Wasteland’<\/em> has its fair share of towering anthems, prospering in its noisy garage punk rock skin. It’s also a record that is littered with stylistic nods to the bands and albums that have shaped Olly Bailey’s musical identity.<\/p>\n
