After a slight festive (and prolonged) break,\u00a0Already Heard<\/strong>‘s routine roundup of weekly album and EP releases has returned. While last week’s\u00a0#NewMusicFriday<\/strong> saw the year kick off with a smattering of releases, today is notably busier.<\/p>\n

Metallic hardcore mob\u00a0Stick To Your Guns<\/strong>‘ influence continues to grow as they return with\u00a0‘Keep Planting Flowers’<\/em><\/a>. While Brighton punk twosome, Lambrini Girls<\/strong>, leave a strong, forthright impression on\u00a0‘Who Let The Dogs Out’<\/em>. Both albums have been reviewed in detail below.<\/p>\n

My personal recommendations come from introspective Louisiana math-rock-tinged indie rockers Inside Voices<\/strong> and their second record – ‘If It Matters’<\/em>. While French post-rock instrumentalist Hanry <\/strong>teases something special. ‘Disruption’<\/em> sees the Rennes-based sextet deliver a pensive and dynamic take on the genre, with an impressive atmospheric ebb and flow. Likewise, studio-based Missouri duo\u00a0Sisters Of\u2026<\/strong> deliver a two-track offering of instrumental post-rock and post-metal.\u00a0‘Marie \/ Michel’<\/em> fuses the sound of Russian Circles and Cult of Luna, utilising a remotely produced, layered approach leading to a acrobatic and compelling short outing.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Alter Bridge and Creed guitarist, Mark Tremonti<\/strong>, returns with a sixth solo album in the form of\u00a0‘The End Will Show Us How’<\/em>. With an expected barrage of riffs, it sees renowned axeman maintain of consistent level of reliable hard rock with plenty of soaring choruses and fiery solos. In contrast,\u00a0‘Perverts<\/em>‘ by\u00a0Ethel Cain<\/strong> (aka Hayden Anhed\u00f6nia) is a bleak 90-minute venture into goth-pop ambience with haunting results.<\/p>\n

The Halo Effect<\/strong> extend Sweden’s melodic death metal legacy with ‘March Of The Unheard’<\/em>. Whereas closer to home, Northern metalcore crew Waterlines<\/strong> serve up a pulverising series of riffs and brutal breakdowns with\u00a0‘WDGAF Vol. 1’<\/em>.\u00a0TesseracT<\/strong> expand 2023’s acclaimed ‘War Of Being’<\/em> record with a\u00a0‘Tour Edition’<\/em> that includes live cuts from their headline set at last year’s Radar Festival. There are also releases from\u00a0Cave In<\/strong> (‘Jupiter (25th Anniversary Reissue)’)<\/em>,\u00a0Franz Ferdinand<\/strong>,\u00a0Zeta<\/strong>, Vampires Everywhere!<\/strong>,\u00a0Alchemy<\/strong>, and more.<\/p>\n

Stick To Your Guns – Keep Planting Flowers<\/h2>\n

Orange County outfit\u00a0Stick To Your Guns<\/strong>\u00a0has represented the Californian hardcore for over two decades, yet as they return for their eighth full-length it considerably sees them in their purest form. You kinda know what to expect from\u00a0STYG<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018Keep Planting Flowers\u2019<\/em>\u00a0quickly meets expectations with the machine gun rumbling of\u00a0\u2018We All Die Anyway\u2019<\/em>\u00a0giving way to\u00a0\u2018Spineless\u2019<\/em>\u2018 siren guitars and Jesse Barnett\u2019s explosive chorus.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, there is a relentless intensity yet when metallic blasts such as\u00a0\u2018Permanent Dark\u2019\u00a0<\/em>you can\u2019t find fault in their steely execution. Influenced by Barnett\u2019s persevering lyrical mindset, it brilliantly captures the positive fighting spirit that appears throughout. A quote by Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti bridges\u00a0\u2018Permanent Dark\u2019<\/em>\u00a0with the roaring\u00a0\u2018Invisible Rain<\/em>\u2018.\u00a0<\/em>It serves as a stomping onslaught with ferocity, comfortably embracing a melodic dynamic in the process. Likewise,\u00a0\u2018Severed Forever\u2019<\/em>\u00a0thrives in its melodic hardcore skin albeit slightly routine.<\/p>\n

Lambrini Girls – Who Let The Dogs Out<\/h2>\n

Brighton-based duo\u00a0Lambrini Girls<\/b>\u00a0aren\u2019t ones to hold back. Rooted in riot grrl punk, the debut outing from Phoebe Lunny and Lilly Macieira,\u00a0\u2018Who Let The Dogs Out\u2019<\/i>, takes no prisoners. Sexual harassment in workplace, male entitlement, body confidence and eating disorders, and housing gentrification are just some of the topics the pair aim at.<\/p>\n

Their fearless list of social ills is complemented by a brash, often rigid, brand of post-punk that echoes former tour pals, Idles. The snappy\u00a0\u2018Bad Apple\u2019\u00a0<\/em>sets out the confrontational tone from the outset. It\u2019s rapid tempo swirls like a tornado of pure angst with jagged bursts of\u00a0\u201c<\/em>Officer what seems to be the problem,\u00a0Or can we only know post mortem<\/em>\u201d screams guitarist and vocalist Lunny. The ruthless pairing of\u00a0\u2018Company Culture\u2019<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018Big Dick Energy\u2019<\/em> sharply follow. They burst with frustration against misogynist and toxic male-dominated workplaces. The latter fizzes with choppy guitars and cowbell-led tempo as Lunny delivers a verbal onslaught on male scumbags who think they know better.<\/p>\n
