\nWhile Family Bike<\/b> may be a new band, that doesn\u2019t mean you won\u2019t recognise the sound and style, especially if you\u2019ve kept your ears to the ground over the last twelve months. That\u2019s because Karl Kuehn makes up half of Family Bike<\/b>, and as a man with an unmistakable vocal style with noisy indie rockers Museum Mouth, it means \u2018Everything You Owned Is Anagrammed\u2019<\/i> has an air of familiarity about it. In this case, however, familiarity does not breed contempt.<\/figure>\n

Instead, it serves as a gateway to the delights of Family Bike<\/b>; an easy access point from which to jump in and get lost in the duo\u2019s weird and wonderful world. The result is one of the most understatedly brilliant albums of the year. <\/p>\n

Everything You Own Is Anagrammed by Family Bike<\/a><\/figure>\n

It doesn\u2019t make it easy for you though. Opener \u2018Big Diction\u2019<\/i> is a ramshackle lo-fi punk blast at odds with the rest of the record. Only 45 seconds long it\u2019s a noisy, thrashy blitzkrieg bop. Almost tuneless, it crashes along like an unstructured, angry ramble set to music. It\u2019s bewildering but also sharp enough to knock you to your senses. After a few listens you can appreciate it as a bit of fun and it certainly shouldn\u2019t detract from what follows, because after that \u2018Everything You Owned Is Anagrammed\u2019<\/i> is a joyous celebration of warm indie-pop wrapped in a deliciously fuzzy lo-fi aesthetic.<\/p>\n

Both \u2018The Best Sleep\u2019<\/i> and \u2018Idiot Boy\u2019<\/i> are prime examples. The former a galloping, knockabout indie-punk blast which recalls the angularity of Desaparecidos but never strays far from having a bloody big hook and a brilliant guitar line, while the latter is somewhat more sedate but no less engaging. Instead, Kuehn\u2019s vocals get to take centre stage. Plaintive and pleading, he can throw in a huge amount of personality into his delivery, even though it feels semi-spoken at times. <\/p>\n

And, while these two tracks are both excellent, they\u2019re not a patch on the spectacular \u2018Heat Rash\u2019<\/i> or \u2018Places\u2019<\/i>. \u2018Heat Rash\u2019<\/i> comes armed with more hooks than a pirate ship and is a spectacularly infectious toe-tapper, while \u2018Places\u2019<\/i> throws up the album\u2019s first real huge sing-along. Again, it sounds like it\u2019s been forged in a basement, but that only adds to the homespun appeal of Family Bike<\/b>. Throw in some brilliantly bittersweet lyrics (\u201cmy goldfish has reached the end of its life\u201d<\/i> a personal favourite) and a raucous ending and you have yourself a real winner.<\/p>\n

Then, just when you think you\u2019ve got Family Bike<\/b> licked, they drop \u2018How I Survived November\u2019<\/i>. Swirling keyboard sounds abound, in what is a minimal take on the blueprint established on the previous five songs. It gives the album space to breathe and shows there\u2019s more to Family Bike<\/b> than straight-up punk-tinged indie-pop songs.<\/p>\n

After that, they\u2019re back to business though. If you\u2019re on board, the spiky \u2018Nobody\u2019s Business\u2019<\/i> is a clear winner. If you require further convincing, then \u2018When You\u2019re Young\u2019<\/i> is the second huge sing-along packed with huge melodies and hooks and some killer wry lyrics \u2013 \u201cRemember when I hated Sugar Ray? Now I listen to them every day\u201d<\/i> the pick of the bunch.<\/p>\n

In truth there\u2019s not a bad song on \u2018Everything You Owned Is Anagrammed\u2019<\/i>. Even when the pace drops over the final three songs, the quality still remains spectacularly high. \u2018Kith and Kin\u2019<\/i> is a gorgeous mid-paced torch song, while \u2018Dylan\u2019s Room\u2019<\/i> is pure lo-fi garage rock which showcases Kuehn\u2019s skill as a lyricist. Just to mix things up, they end with the brooding \u2018Carson Daly\u2019<\/i>, which drags their sound out to an impressive 6 minutes. It could have been torturous; instead it works perfectly, building to a fitting end on what is a delightful album packed with charm and character. Seek it out, you won\u2019t be disappointed.<\/p>\n
