For example, the eighth album from\u00a0<strong>Bury Tomorrow<\/strong>,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Will You Haunt Me, With That Same Patience&#8217;, <\/em>and another being <em>&#8216;Mened\u00e9k&#8217;<\/em> from Hungarian post-rock trio\u00a0<strong>T\u00d6RZS<\/strong>. Nevertheless, I did listen to the new releases from <strong>The Callous Daoboys<\/strong>, <strong>Pelican<\/strong>, <strong>Arm&#8217;s Length<\/strong>, and <strong>Soot Sprite<\/strong>, which you can read my thoughts on below.<\/p>\n<p>Today also see rising rockers <strong>Sleep Theory<\/strong> release their debut album,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Afterglow&#8217;<\/em>.\u00a0<strong>Linkin Park<\/strong> gives their <em>&#8216;From Zero&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>the deluxe treatment, a mere six months since its initial release.\u00a0<strong>Stand Atlantic<\/strong> do it too with last August&#8217;s <em>&#8216;WAS HERE&#8217;<\/em> record.\u00a0LA industrial\/electrical duo <strong>Youth Code<\/strong> return after four years with &#8216;<em>Yours, With Malice&#8217;<\/em>. Florida pop-rockers <strong>Arrows in Action<\/strong> deliver &#8220;side A of their<em> &#8216;I Think I\u2019ve Been Here Before&#8217;<\/em> LP.<\/p>\n<p>If you want more metalcore, then there&#8217;s &#8216;<em>Coda&#8217;<\/em> by\u00a0<strong>Novelists<\/strong>, and <em>&#8216;This Pain Will Serve You,&#8217;<\/em> the new record from London-based group\u00a0<strong>Confessions of a Traitor<\/strong>. While Dundee pop-rockers <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>Copper<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0Lungs<\/strong> return with\u00a0<em>&#8216;Broken Beautiful&#8217;<\/em>. Titled\u00a0<em>&#8216;I Don\u2019t Want to See You in Heaven,&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0it&#8217;s conceptually positioned as a relic from a dystopian future found in the <em>&#8216;Museum of Failure&#8217;<\/em>. For the Atlanta group, it sees them adding emotional substance to a sound that is as eclectic as ever.<\/p>\n<p>Although anchored by their mathcore sound, <strong>The Callous Daoboys<\/strong> have so much to offer. Whether that is on\u00a0<em>&#8216;Schizophrenia Legacy&#8217;<\/em>s sharp metalcore blasts occasionally seguing into smooth jazz dips and a sax-laden bridge, or the bloodthirsty <em>&#8216;Tears On Lambo Leather&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>with its hardcore beatdowns being aided by Orthodox\u2019s Adam Easterling. Nevertheless, <em>&#8216;Flickering Resonance&#8217;<\/em> sees the Chicago outfit return after six years. It also sees founding guitarist Laurent Schroeder-Lebec return after a decade away. However, <em>&#8216;Flickering Resonance&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>is far from a band treading old ground; it merely hones in on their sonic strengths.<\/p>\n<p>From the tight alt-rock riffs of\u00a0<em>&#8216;Gulch&#8217;<\/em> to the pensive post-hardcore\/emo tones on\u00a0<em>&#8216;Flickering Stillness&#8217;<\/em> to the textured swells of\u00a0<em>&#8216;Indelible,&#8217; <\/em><strong>Pelican<\/strong> delivers an array of tones that comfortably sit confined in their wheelhouse. Tracks such as <em>&#8216;Specific Resonance&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>&#8216;Evergreen&#8217;<\/em> thrive on their ability to deliver big riffs that are dense yet not overpowered. On the former, the doom thickness makes way for atmospheric space rock tones, emphasising\u00a0<strong>Pelican<\/strong>&#8216;s structural craftsmanship. The latter resonates with luscious riffs, while allowing bassist Bryan Herweg to provide groove to the mix.<\/p>\n<p>Later on,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Pining For Ever&#8217;<\/em> sees the quartet give a stylistic nod to the likes of Quicksand and Christie Front Drive, before organically stepping into post-rock territory. While 2022 debut, <em>&#8216;Never Before Seen, Never Again Found&#8217;<\/em> was a case of having a lifetime to write their debut,\u00a0<em>&#8216;There\u2019s A Whole World Out There&#8217;,<\/em> is more relevant. It results in Steinberg&#8217;s pain being sharper and unfiltered.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The<em> World&#8217;<\/em> instantly sets the sentimental tone with soft guitars giving way to a desperate Steinberg with his bandmates elevating the raw emotion produced.\u00a0Musically,\u00a0<em>&#8216;There\u2019s A Whole World Out There&#8217;<\/em> sounds like an actual band who have toured together. Where previously, guitarist Jeremy Whyte, bassist Ben Greenblatt, and drummer Jeff Whyte joined Steinberg to flesh out the songs on<em> &#8216;Never Before Seen\u2026&#8217;<\/em> This allows the four-piece to naturally evolve, yet is often firmly grounded in punchy emo. Tracks such as <em>&#8216;The Weight&#8217;<\/em> thrive with a pop-punk warmth, but are countered by the rose-tinted textured splendour of &#8216;<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, 'Noto Sans', sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol', 'Noto Color Emoji';\">Palinopsia&#8217; with its sweeping strings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;You Ominously End&#8217;<\/em> teases with a bluegrass-infused intro before galloping into pop-punk territory, with a subtle banjo plucking away. The use of banjo appears throughout <em>&#8216;TAWWOT,&#8217; <\/em>most notably on the determined anthem that is\u00a0<em>&#8216;Attic&#8217;<\/em>. Here, sombre piano keys and twanging banjos build to impactful (and harmonious) emo\/pop-punk.<\/p>\n<p>At <em>&#8216;TAWWOT&#8217;<\/em>s core is Steinberg&#8217;s overtly honest songwriting. For the most part, he&#8217;s self-reflective, even if he&#8217;s being selfless (<em>&#8216;Funny Face&#8217;<\/em> and <em>&#8216;Halley&#8217;<\/em>). It allows him to be earnest and consistent. Fittingly, the closing track, <em>&#8216;Morning Person&#8217;, <\/em>plays to his strengths, showing his vulnerability and resilience across seven minutes. It allows them to stylistically expand. Whether that be Jeff Whyte&#8217;s low-end drum fills, or the subtly soaring of post-rock guitars.\u00a0Elsewhere,\u00a0<em>&#8216;The Wound&#8217;<\/em> sees him accept his defeatist attitude with a hint of black humour; <em>\u201cwhen I swear on my life, we both know that the stakes aren\u2019t high\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The main take away from\u00a0<em>&#8216;There\u2019s A Whole World Out There&#8217;<\/em> is that Steinberg has accepted the issues he&#8217;s been through, and he&#8217;s coping. Shimmering with hints of emo and shoegaze, its eleven songs lean into an assured indie-punk reminiscent of defunct group Muncie Girls. Frontwoman Elise Cook leads with often all-too-relatable themes of struggle, perseverance, and occasional optimism.<\/p>\n<p>Early highlights,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Days After Days&#8217;<\/em> and\u00a0<em>&#8216;All My Friends Are Depressed<\/em>&#8216; feel equally vulnerable and determined. The former hones in on the need for empathy. While the latter sees Cook split her focus between a societal mental health crisis and an internal reminder to be active, or nothing will change. This theme of self-observation pops up through\u00a0<em>&#8216;Wield Your Hope\u2026&#8217;<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>&#8216;Spectator&#8217;<\/em> floats against the numbness of constant bad news.\u00a0<em>&#8220;Only so much I can take of reality,&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>sings Cook as Sam Cother&#8217;s drifting drums and Sean Mariner&#8217;s grounded bass lines complement the atmospheric tone.<\/p>\n<p>Past relationships and friendships are also touched upon.\u00a0<em>&#8216;Great Expectations&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>punches with cathartic tendencies, ditching toxic friends (<em>&#8220;I spend around you takes a year off of my life&#8221;<\/em>).\u00a0<em>&#8216;Viscous Cycles&#8217;<\/em> ruminates on behavioural patterns, allowing Cook to share her vulnerability in damaging relationships. This susceptibility reappears on closing track,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Cautious Optimist&#8217;<\/em><em>.\u00a0<\/em>Tender guitars allow her fragility to be emphasised, ponderously guessing what comes next while being carefully hopeful.<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0<strong>Soot Sprite<\/strong> sound isn&#8217;t unique, it allows Cook and company to write compelling songs that are full of emotion.
