mclusky preview new mini-album with ‘as a dad’

As they prepare to digitally release their new mini album next week (March 20th), ‘i sure am getting sick of this bowling alley,’ mclusky have shared a track called ‘As A Dad’.

It sees the trio deliver their routine mix of observational, cynical lyricism over off-kilter guitars.

On ‘As A Dad’ the band stated:

“as a dad” is a song about several things.

the first of these several things are men who begin sentences / clauses with ‘as a dad…’. which is fine as long as the sentence / clause bears no relevance to the actual experience of being a dad. occasionally though, the prefix is appropriate (about 1/7). society must bend to this.

the second of the several things is a modern child’s wonder at how much it must despise its male progenitor in the early stages of life. the mother is all. the father can fall down the stairs and die in a puddle of his own slippers, and that’s okay.

the third, and last i can be arsed to list, of the several things, is something to do with the pride of being replaced by your offspring. i look forward to gradually fading into the background (unless i die suddenly in an avalanche) and becoming a grey footnote set against a sofa. when i stop breathing i hope nobody notices for at least an hour – this means that whatever board game is being played at this family gathering i’ve just fantasised is at least competitive (and wasn’t an expensive waste of time and money).

The vinyl release of ‘i sure am getting sick of this bowling alley’ will be on May 1st via Ipecac Recordings.

Pop-Punk Up-and-Comers Super Sometimes Detail New Album

San Diego pop-punk outfit Super Sometimes has set a release date of May 15th for their new album, ‘Show the World What’s Underneath’. It will be released through Pure Noise Records.

To mark the album announcement, the SoCal trio have shared an infectious track called ‘Afterthought’. “’Afterthought held its hand up as the clear opener to the album as soon as it was written,” says the band. “From the beautifully melancholic verse to the finger-point–inducing chorus, the song is haunting and riddled with passion in both its lyrics and vocal delivery, intended to convey the intense feeling of longing and desperation for someone who treats you as nothing more than an ‘afterthought’.”

The creation of ‘Show the World What’s Underneath’ saw Super Sometimes write with the likes of Knuckle Puck’s Nick Casasanto, Hot Mulligan’s Chris Freeman and producer Kyle Black, before recording with longtime collaborator Zach Tuch.

“’Show the World What’s Underneath’ is us staking our flag in the ground as one of the torchbearers of pop-punk,” the band confidently states. “There’s a little bit of something for everybody, and our take on the genre will definitely be a breath of fresh air for those who have been looking for something a little different in the scene. We hope it inspires more people to fall in love with pop-punk the same way we did growing up.”

Hanry Set to Return with a New Album and Shares New Single

French post-rock collective Hanry will return on May 29th with a new album called ‘What Came From Silence’ via Pelagic Records. It promises to see the quintet at their most expansive and cinematic, with their new single, ‘Aurora,’ exemplifying this.

“’Aurora’ is our first single from the album and the spark that ignited the band’s story,” the band explain. “Originally composed around ten years ago by Anthony Leliard, the track was later reshaped and arranged collectively for our debut album, \What Came From Silence’. Dark and tense, ‘Aurora’ moves through contrasting periods, from heavy, shadowed moments to brighter, more radiant passages. The piece builds and recedes in hypnotic waves before culminating in a massive, liberating explosion that carries the listener toward new horizons.”

A-Tota-So Share New Single (‘Death Rattle’)

Noisy alt-rockers A-Tota-So have shared a new track. ‘Death Rattle’, released through bUTTONpUSHER, sees the trio deliver a broody number with a hypnotic middle, highlighting their versatile, forward-pushing sound. It also sees guitarist Marty Toner taking on vocal fuites for the first time.

“‘Death Rattle’ is about the feeling of losing control while life keeps moving at a super fast pace,” shares Toner. “It’s about facing the chaos, noise, and pressures around us and realising nobody gets a free pass but even so we keep going even though we tend to second-guess ourselves and overanalyse everything thrown at us.”

Hear Bite The Hand’s Chaotic + Cathartic ‘Foam’

Arizona’s Bite The Hand have returned with a relentlessly energetic track called ‘Foam’. The track sees vocalist Echo Breen wrestle with notion being a “good girl,” holding all together, and being the “bad girl” forced to claw her way out whenever things spiral.

‘Foam’ highlights Bite The Hand self-styled brand of “sugar-core”, proving to be equally fierce and melodic.

Teen Suicide Preview New Album with ‘Spiders’

Having recently shared details of their new album, ‘Nude descending staircase headless,’ Teen Suicide continue to preview it with new single, ‘Spiders’.

The track sees Kitty Ray takes on lead vocals entirely on her own. Alongside husband Sam, the pair deliver a number that lures you with glistening verses, before erupting with fuzz-drenched choruses. The end result demonstrates Teen Suicide‘s new found hi-fi and heavy direction.

“This song was written on a sunny day in Florida, with birds chirping at the sliding glass door. The brightness of the day made me weirdly angry and I needed to release some venom. I wanted to scream about a girl who tied knots in my mind, and I wanted the guitars to do a certain thing, so Sam and I stayed inside and plugged away at it,” says Kitty on the creation of ‘Spiders’. “This is the first song I’ve written for a full band with a human drummer. I was absolutely terrified to sing it live when we started playing it in 2024–it used to come out of me weak, like a baby goat bleat. Since then the song hurts less and screaming has helped me find my voice. I feel like it turned out pretty cool!”

‘Nude descending staircase headless’ is set to be released through Run For Cover Records on April 17th.

Masca Pay Ode to Making Music on ‘Love Letters’

With their new single, ‘Love Letters’, Bristol trio Masca have bared their soul by writing an ode to their craft of making music. For the trio of Christina Maynard, Jack Hamilton, and Ben Holyoake, it sees them weigh up the risk and reward of being an independent band.

As the title track from their forthcoming debut album, Masca displays a lyrically raw and musically tight sound, blending pop-rock and indie sensibilities.

“it’s a love letter – along with all the other songs we’ve ever written – to music,” says Christina. “It also details our worries and the feeling that we’re running out of time to be able to continue with music.”

‘Love Letters’ is set for release on April 3rd.
