Beartooth and Windwaker both preview new albums this week, while downcast team up with Youth Fountain on an emotional new single. We are also sad to report the passing of Sick Of It All vocalist Lou Koller.

Beartooth Previews New Album with ‘Eyes Closed’

In recent months, Beartooth have been building up to the release of their sixth album, ‘Pure Ecstasy’. With the album due for release on August 28th, they’ve shared another track from the record, ‘Eyes Closed’.

It demonstrates Caleb Shomo’s vulnerable songwriting, pairing it with massive riffs and towering screams. “There are so many fun riffs to play on ‘Eyes Closed.’ It felt incredible to scream it out and let go,” shares Shomo. “The song was written from the ground up with Jordan (Fish), and the moment it was a demo, we knew we had something special.”

Beartooth will follow up the release of ‘Pure Ecstasy’ with three UK headline dates in October. Support comes from Silverstein and Kingdom of Giants.

Sick of It All Vocalist Lou Koller Passes Away, Aged 59

Lou Koller, the vocalist and co-founding member of Sick Of It All has died. The frontman of the New York hardcore band passed following a battle with cancer of the esophagus, which had extended into his stomach. Koller was 59 years-old.

In a message on social media, the band shared:

“It’s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller. The level of loss that we feel at this time is overwhelming. This year would have marked Sick of it All’s 40th anniversary as a band, and Lou’s camaraderie, commitment and enthusiasm were always steadfast throughout the years. We have lost a beloved friend and an iconic frontman. Lou had the power to raise everyone’s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.

At this time of intense grief, we must again acknowledge the great help and support offered by everyone who donated to Lou’s medical fund. You all helped Lou feel very special and very loved as he battled away these last two years. His battle is over now and he can finally rest. Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.”

Windwaker Detail New Album (‘Smile, You’re On Camera’)

Aussie genre-bending outfit Windwaker have confirmed their third album will be released this autumn. ‘smile, you’re on camera’ will be available on October 23rd through Fearless Records.

The news arrives with the release of a track called ‘closer’. Blending electronic elements with alt-metal, the track showcases Windwaker‘s push and pull intensity and anthemic capabilities.

“‘closer’ is an allegory for the struggles of being in a band dealing with rejection, self-doubt, and the resilience in spite of that to keep going with something you’ve given everything to,” the band explains. “It’s a message for all to keep trying and strive further toward their goals. This song is the first on the album to highlight a point in life where you have to make the heavy decision to either jump ship and pivot toward a ‘normal life’ or to keep sacrificing in favor of something you’ve invested so much into.”

As for ‘smile, you’re on camera,’ the record promises to offer a set of “catchy, energetic and heartfelt songs,” with a more guitar-forward sound. Lyrically, the album looks to ruminate on the weight of time and growth, and the struggles and sacrifice for a better life, despite being part of a world full of superficial and sinister characters and bad actors.

downcast Team Up with Youth Fountain on Emotional New Single

Ahead of a run of UK dates next month, Bristol emo-rockers downcast have released a new single called ‘falling to pieces’. While in the past the quartet have shown their upbeat side, ‘falling to pieces’ sees their emotional side pushed to the forefront. On the track, frontman Liam Edwards addresses the passing of his brother last year.

“‘falling to pieces’ is about my little brother who passed away last September at the age of twenty-eight. He struggled with severe alcohol addiction for a long time, which eventually caused fatal medical complications,” explains Edwards. “The song was written during a time of confusion, before we understood exactly what took him from us. All I knew was that nothing could change what had happened. The song captures the anger and frustration I carried while learning to accept this.”

The track also includes guest vocals from Tyler Zanon of Youth Fountain.

downcast will tour the UK in late August alongside Stay Safe and CF98.
