Welcome to the third instalment of Something For The Weekend. We’re starting to get into the swing of things now but we still want to hear who YOU think should be featured.
This week we feature the newest post-Los Mendozas band from Brighton (Summerslam 88), Hardcore darker than Nolan’s newest film (No Fun) and a compilation of the best UK Emo from Close To Home Records.

Summerslam 88
FFO: H2O, Bouncing Souls
Another summer, another pop punk band from Brighton including one or more members of the sadly defunct Los Mendozas (this time it’s Mark of Corrigan fame). Summerslam 88 is a little heavier either of the previous bands mentioned, with more than a passing similarity to the legendary Bouncing Souls and H2O. The seven songs available to download cover the standard punk rock subjects of ‘the scene’ and ‘growing up, not giving in’ whilst also managing to sneak a couple of wrestling references between the lines. It’s nothing groundbreaking but it’s definitely worth making space for it on your summer playlist.

NO FUN
FFO: Graf Orlock, Lich, and Self Loathing.
No Fun are nothing like Summerslam88. No Fun play angry, negative hardcore. It’s fast, it’s loud and it makes you want to punch things – all in all, a perfect band for those times when positivity and songs about girls just don’t cut it. Since forming in the summer of 2011 they’ve had 3 releases on a variety of labels plus there’s another two in the pipeline so I think it’s fair to say that there’s not much chance of them slowing down anything soon!

Close To Home & Friends Vol 2
FFO: UK Emo and Pop punk.
There’s nothing overly complicated about the second instalment in Joe’s Close To Home & Friends compilation series. It’s simply a collection of tracks showcasing some of the best UK Emo and Pop Punk. I’d recommend a couple of stand out tracks if I could but if I’m honest there isn’t a duff contribution on there so stop reading and start streaming!
