Album Review: The Twin Dracula – Hell Hath All Fury

The Twin Dracula – Hell Hath All FuryThe Twin Dracula have quickly established themselves as one of my favourite hometown bands thanks to an intense live show and some punishing, riff heavy anthems.

‘Hell Hath All Fury’ is a similarly affecting slab of punchy, hardcore-tinged Brit-rock from the Reading mob, recalling everything from The Bronx to Rocket From The Crypt and Hot Snakes. Packed with attitude and brimming with anger, it’s a tumultuous, short, sharp, shock and serves as the perfect introduction to a band on the cusp of breaking out into the wider arena.

Opener ‘Catholic Discipline’ is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it groove monster that serves to introduce the following three songs on this all-too-short EP. ‘Liars’, however, is much meatier, giving you something to really dig your teeth into (ahem). It’s a rollicking tale of excess, although the lyrics fly by so fast you have no real idea what The Twin Dracula are going on about. Still, it’s a foot-stomping triumph that will have you on side from the off.

‘Alura’ is better still, adding shades of light to the band’s beating black heart, while ‘You’ll Never Defeat The Cobras’ is a five-minute blitz which again showcases the group’s ability to add texture and melody and hooks to what is a near relentless sonic assault.

There are a number of British upstarts threatening to break through at the moment, but few as stylistically individual as The Twin Dracula. Now, a co-headline with Brighton’s similarly influenced garage punks Nature Channel would be really something.

4/5
