First track, ‘The Road to Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions’ throws us right in at the deep end, opening with a bouncy guitar riff. The lyrical content is darker than what we are used to from Get Up Go but their usual pop-punk style offsets this nicely. Bass and drums carry the song through the verse, giving it an almost ‘The Story So Far’ style groove.Get Up Go differ from a lot of bands in the scene just now in that the vocals are extremely melodic. They haven’t bought into this “braying donkey” style pop-punk vocal that was made popular by bands like New Found Glory and The Story So Far. ‘The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions’ is a great showcase of every facet of the band’s sound. The quiet bass only bridge builds into the anthemic chorus that really does stick in your head.
‘Balboa Complex’ keeps up the frenetic pace, another bouncy intricate lead guitar part leading us into the verse. The vocals on this track have a totally different delivery, showing the huge versatility that Get Up Go have in their locker. ‘Balboa Complex’ is another three minutes of the same fast paced intricate riffs, groovy bass and assertive percussion that made the opening track so memorable. It is clear just from these two tracks that Get Up Go may be on to something, and this before we have even heard stand out track ‘BK, Like OMG’.
‘BK, Like OMG’ brings this short but sweet EP to a fantastic close.Get Up Go have a real gift for making choruses sound massive, in this case expertly building up to it before impressive double bass technique and huge chords combine with emotive vocals to create something Four Year Strong would be proud of. Anyone can see that with a bit more refining, Get Up Go could breathe a new, interesting lease of life into the UK pop-punk scene. They are doing something slightly different than most bands and this will surely get them noticed.
