Song of the Day: Boston Manor – ‘Sliding Doors’

In February, Boston Manor returned with a track titled ‘Container’. Now as they hit the road for a headline UK tour, they’ve delivered one of their most instantaneous tracks in recent years. ‘Sliding Doors’ thrives with spiky distortion that bubbles under in the verse and then erupts during the soaring chorus. Reminiscent of Deftones, it sees the North West group take a more abrasive approach yet maintains their raw energy.

Named after the 1998 film of the same name, the track sees Boston Manor frontman Henry Cox reflect on what could’ve been, considering how the band came to fruition and what they’ve done in their time together.

“I started thinking about all of the decisions that I’ve made that have led me to the life I have and how circumstantial a lot of it is. It got me thinking about how Boston Manor started,” explains Cox. “I’d had a few conversations with Dan [Cunniff, bass] and Mike [Cunniff, lead guitar] (who I barely knew at the time) about starting a band. But at that time I was in art school in a different city and I had a bunch of other stuff going on. I was also starting like two other bands with different people so I figured it was just something that you talk about.”

For Cox, his sliding doors moment involved a late-night bus crash that resulted in him going to Mike’s house. It would end with the pair writing the first Boston Manor demo. “If that car hadn’t pulled out on that bus, we probably never would’ve started Boston Manor and been all the places we’ve been, I wouldn’t have met my wife and half of my friends. I don’t know if I would even be playing music now,” Henry reflects.

The accompanying video for ‘Sliding Doors’ carries the same notion of how our decisions change who we are, creating different versions of ourselves. In this case, sees Cox take various career paths; supermarket assistant, factory worker, working in a bowling alley, and fronting Boston Manor.
