Emerging out of Los Angeles, Fime have returned with a new track called ‘Better Half of a Dollar’.
Led by guitarist/vocalist Beto Brakmo, the surging track is equally chaotic and cathartic as the quartet channels their financial frustrations and existential dread. It results in a dynamic and sharp song that borders classic rock, indie sensibilities, and an underpinned hardcore punk energy.
A conversation Brakmo had with his former boss inspired the track’s title. With the ever-growing gap between wages and the cost of living in L.A., his former boss casually offered the Fime‘s vocalist/guitarist a raise of just 75¢. As he screams on ‘Better Half of a Dollar’, “it’s never enough.,” and you can’t blame him.
The quartet, completed by bassist/vocalist Maxine Garcia, drummer Eric Promani, and guitarist/vocalist Scott Leahy, first came together as the backing band for Jay Som (Melina Duterte). Fime released several EP’s; ‘Dining,’ ‘Outside’ ‘Sprawl’ in the late 2010s. They followed it up with their 2022 full-length, ‘Sweeter Memory’. Its eleven songs offered waves of big alt-rock hooks with hints of shoegaze and garage rock amongst the catchy vocals. The album also saw the quartet reconnect with Duterte, as she served as its producer.
Since then, Fime have been working on its follow-up with ‘Better Half of a Dollar’ being an early glimpse of what’s to come.
