Cambridge post-hardcore newcomers Indifferent Engine have become the latest name to join the Church Road Records roster. The quintet will release their debut album, ‘Speculative Fiction’, on May 30th.
Since their formation, Indifferent Engine has built a tight-knit cult following from their live shows, venturing out to London and Hertfordshire. Their versatile sound embraces post-hardcore, experimental rock, contemporary prog and alternative metal. Whereas on stage, there tend to be more CRT-TV monitors than guitar pedals.
‘Speculative Fiction’ was produced, mixed and engineered by Tom Hill (Modern Rituals) at The Bookhouse studio in London. It sees Indifferent Engine develop a narrative based on disasters- factual, fictional and personal. As a preview, ‘Crashing Into A Hillside In The Dead Of Night’, has been released today.
With its tremolo guitars, atmospheric harmonies, and crunching bass complementing emotive vocals, it’s a compelling introduction to Indifferent Engine. As the track ebbs and flows, it tells the story of an aeroplane disaster. It’s one where the flight crew are running out of fuel, yet keeps circling in the hope that air traffic controllers permit them to land. ‘Crashing…’ channels the feeling of not standing up for yourself, even though you wish you could’ve.
