Elsewhere, Swedish metalcore favourites Imminence give last year’s ‘The Black’ record a fresh lick of paint with ‘The Return Of The Black’. It sees them expand the record with a smattering of remixes and re-recorded tracks with guest spots coming from the likes of Holding Absence’s Lucas Woodland and Orbit Culture’s Niklas Karlsson.
Black Foxxes make a return with their self-funded fourth album – ‘The Haar’. The emotionally raw rockers have somewhat been forgotten about with this being their first album in five years. However, from hearing a few tracks from ‘The Haar’, Mark Holley and company simmer with tenderness and richness, comfortably treading the alt/indie rock line.
Someone else making a return is alt-rock pioneer Bob Mould. ‘Here We Go Crazy’ is the 15th solo album from the former Hüsker Dü frontman. It sees Mould, alongside drummer Jon Wurster and bassist Jason Narducy, serve up a set of anthemic alt-rock songs. Rooted in Mould‘s personal and societal fears and uncertainty, ‘Here We Go Crazy’ is lyrically contemplative yet thrives in its musical muscle.
Arena-bothering rock acts Alter Bridge and Disturbed both celebrate album anniversaries. The former mark 20 years of ‘One Day Remains’ with b-sides and live cuts. Whereas Disturbed bulk up their 2000 debut, ‘The Sickness’ with two discs of demos, b-sides, and a full live set.
Among all these returns and anniversary releases, there is also the debut album from Michael Cera Palin. The Atlanta emo trio have been a name that has been popping up for several years, yet after some false starts, they’re finally sharing their first album today. ‘We Could Be Brave’ proves to be 10 songs of raw and flexible indie/emo. Songs such as ‘Tardy’ and ‘Gracious’ highlight the MCP‘s energetic side, only to be countered by the warmth Midwest emo sound of ‘Feast or Famine’ and ‘Crypto’. It’s one album that isn’t to sleep on this week.
Another record not to ignore is ‘Lullabies For Dogs’ from Chase Petra. Touted to me as being “for fans of” Paramore, Charly Bliss, The Regrettes, Panic! At The Disco, their sophomore record sees the three-piece in an introspective mood. Wrestling with existential internal and external thoughts, songs such as ‘Centrifugal Force’ and ‘The Suture’ are musically warm and lyrically self-aware. While ‘Because I Am My Own Dog’ and ‘Two Nights in New York’ highlight vocalist Hunter Allen’s vulnerable storytelling.
There’s also new releases from Divorce, French progressive metallers March of Scylla, Italian/Punjabi indie-rock sisters Baby Said, hardcore mob Split, art rockers Consumables, and “sludge pop” group Vordermann.
