#NewMusicFriday: May 23rd 2025

NewMusicFriday May 23rd 2025

Although Coachella, The Great Escape, along with a few others have already taken place, festival season kicks off this weekend with the Slam Dunk Festival. If you’re like me, you’ve been hoping for good weather. However, if you’re not heading to either the North or South events, you can listen to some of this week’s #NewMusicFriday releases.

Today sees the likes of emo rockers Charmer and genre-smashing duo House of Protection share new music. I shared my thoughts on both of these below. In addition, Skunk Anansie return with ‘The Painful Truth.’ The Britrock group’s first album in nine years sees them incorporate electronic elements, with flashes of post-punk and ska.

Further afield, there is the debut album from Senna. They are the latest in a factory line of German-based metalcore bands. However, ‘Stranger To Love’ utilises pleasing grooves, technical instrumentation, and emotional depth to leave a strong impression.Danish experimental punk four-piece Pleaser  deliver their second album,  ‘Begging Guitars’. It serves up a mix of lyrically earnest songs, pairing it with a raucous energy and the occasional metallic riff. Meanwhile, French post-metallers Year of No Light release a unique live album. ‘Les Maîtres Fous’ was recorded a decade ago as a response to French filmmaker Jean Rouch’s controversial 1950’s docufiction of the same name. The two “track’ release sees the instrumental sextet complement the documentary’s sensitive subject with an intense performance.

There’s also music from Korean Cars from Follo, Norway. Mini-album, ‘#1’ provides a stirring brand of post-rock, drawing inspiration from alternative and post-hardcore scenes of the ’90s and 2000s. You can find new releases from the likes of MSPAINT, Hinder, Sports TeamHäxanPoison The Preacher, and more today.

Charmer – Downpour

When it comes to modern Midwestern emo, Michigan outfit Charmer have always been somewhat under the radar. Appreciated by those who favour emotionally layered songwriting, the quartet blend nostalgic emo-rock with flashes of pop-punk urgency.

Their third album, ‘Downpour’, marks a return after five years away. That time hasn’t been idle, with each member going through personal changes. For vocalist David Daignault, new fatherhood in particular has shaped the lyrical tone. Throughout the album, he reflects on desperation, uncertainty, and the delicate balance of care and responsibility.

House of Protection – Outrun You All

In the eight months since dropping their debut EP ‘GALORE’, House of Protection’s stock has continued to rise. Thanks to tours with Poppy and Bad Omens, and a notable collaboration with Architects, Stephen Harrison and Aric Improta have carved out their own brand of explosive, genre-defying alternative punk. Their second EP, ‘Outrun You All’, sustains that momentum, matching ‘GALORE’ in energy while expanding their sonic palette.

The EP opens with the brief and eerie ‘524å§ł€€°’, a cryptic intro that segues seamlessly into ‘Afterlife’. Glitchy electronics, dense guitars, and distorted beats create a rich backdrop for melodic metalcore bursts. Harrison’s cathartic crescendos pair with sharp, rhythmic bars, while Improta keeps a tight grip on the tempo, his restraint amplifying the track’s underlying magnetism.
