Song of the Day: El Moono – ‘The Charm’

El Moono

Brightonian four-piece El Moono serve up a heavy cocktail on ‘The Charm’. From its ethereal melodies to its downtrodden, spacious verses, to crushing riffs, it sees the alt-rockers provide a compelling preview of their upcoming debut album – ‘The Waking Sun’.

While those aforementioned melodies tease a lighter side, undoubtedly ‘The Charm’ is a dark, almost sinister, track. “This song was written about domestic abuse within a broken household, referring to the abuser as a hypnotic snake. The dark themes are contrasted by the atmospheric, psychedelic production and as close to pop as our choruses get,” El Moono explained.

Since emerging out of Brighton in 2018, El Moono have been honing their blend of rock, hardcore, metal and grunge over the course of several EPs and singles. Most notably, 2022’s ‘Temple Corrupted’ EP exemplified their ability to craft colossal songs that are intense as they are majestically executed.

‘The Waking Sun’ sees the band consisting of Zac Jackson (vocals/guitar), Jamie Haas (guitar), Harry Logan (bass), and Chris Cartwright (drums) return with vengeance. Hinting at an expanded abrasive and mature sound, tracks like ‘The Charm’, along with past singles ‘The First Man on Mars’ and ‘Chains’, means ‘The Waking Sun’ has a hell of a lot of potential.

In the past, El Moono have toured the UK and Europe with the likes of Black Peaks, Phoxjaw, Haggard Cat, Fangclub, and Press to MECO. ‘The Waking Sun’ will be supported with several UK shows and festival spots in the coming months.
