Song of the Day: Poppy Wizard – ‘Drowning’

Poppy Wizard

Taking their stylistic cues from Superheaven and Narrow Head, German newcomers Poppy Wizard make an instant impression with their debut single – ‘Drowning’. Its hazy “grunge-gaze” sound weaves itself around an alt-rock spine. Lukas Andrzejewski’s fuzzy guitar creates a cloudy mist to shadow Hendrik Dyga’s vocals. While bassist Robin Kwasniewski and drummer Philipp Baum fittingly control ‘Drowning’s low end.

Although this is their first track released, Poppy Wizard has been in the works for almost four years. The project started as an experiment between two members in Düsseldorf and Cologne during the Covid pandemic. It’s since escalated into a four-piece group made up of longtime friends. Furthermore, Lukas Andrzejewski plays bass in the hardcore pop-punk outfit, Hippie Trim.

Besides Dyga directing the supernatural video for ‘Drowning’, and a trio of imminent shows in neighbouring Austria, Poppy Wizard isn’t giving much away right now. Nevertheless, we’ll keep an eye out to see whatever they do next.

‘Drowning’ by Poppy Wizard is available now on Supervillain.
