Festival Preview: Slam Dunk Festival 2013 - 20 Must-See Bands

image

Finally! One of our favourite festivals of the year is upon us. As always the Slam Dunk Festival has stirred up a wealth of outstanding talent from the world of rock, hardcore, punk, ska, pop-punk, metalcore and everything else in between.

This year sees the festival expanding once again with a third English date in Wolverhampton followed by the very first overseas event in Dublin, Ireland.

With so much to choose from, the Already Heard team have picked out 20 bands you HAVE to see this weekend.

What do you think to our choices? What bands are you looking forward to seeing? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter.

Deaf Havana
In November 2011, the then quartet released their album ‘Only Fools & Worthless Liars’ and on first track ‘The Past Six Years.’ vocalist James Veck-Gilodi lamented the band’s fortunes; they weren’t anywhere near where they wanted to be and were seemingly only known for 2009 track ‘Friends Like These.’

But how things can change in the space of two years! The group opened the main stage at Reading & Leeds festival last year and embarked on a December headline tour, selling out O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London, as well as selling out all dates on their recent unplugged tour. And this year, things have only gotten better. They’ve released a killer single in ‘Boston Square,’ which is from their album ‘Old Souls’ due to be released in September and are going on yet another tour this October.

Deaf Havana also swelled their ranks, adding Matthew Veck-Gilodi and Max Britton to the fold. This group are chomping at the bit to be let out of the starting stall; catch them on the main stage before they race off into the distance. (JT)

Where & When: 8.05 – 8.50pm (Leeds/Wolves) / 8.20 – 9.05pm (Hatfield) on the Jager Stage.

image

Bury Tomorrow
Metalcore quintet Bury Tomorrow are no strangers to Slam Dunk. Having played there in 2011, they’ve returned once again. The release of their 2012 album ‘Union Of Crowns’ saw them jump up into the big leagues, touring the world over and joining festival line-ups such as Download.

Having played at Vans Warped Tour last November when it came back to the UK for the first time in a long time, this lot will have absolutely no problem in whipping the crowd up into a sweaty, crazed mob. (JT)

Where & When: 6.40 – 7.20pm on the Monster Energy stage.

Album Review: Man Overboard - Heart Attack

image

A name inspired by eternal man-childs and pop-as-hell-punk legends Blink-182, a sound greatly indebted to Lifetime and Midtown, a slogan-born initiative to bring kids together to ‘defend pop punk’, it’s easy to see how Man Overboard have managed to dig their way into the hearts of pop-punk fans. Prolific, generously catchy, animated by youthful angst and relentlessly energetic, the New Jersey lot project an identity that perfectly fits the fan-craving mold as they seduce with their ability to walk a blurry line between street-credibility and childishness. A pop-punk fan’s wet dream, in other words.

Yet gazillionth release Heart Attack might prove an alienating move for hordes of loyal fans of Man Overboard are confronted with a release that contains several tracks over 3’30’’ (LOUD GASPS, MUFFLED CRYING, YOUTUBE RANTS, NEWSLETTER UNSUBSCRIBES). In fact, apart from a handful of tracks in the first quarter of the album (namely Secret Pain, Boy Without Batteries andWhere I Left You), the band’s signature commitment to breakneck pace has been largely discarded, emphasizing the album’s sonic shift in the direction of a less urgent brand of pop-rock. Nowhere is it more obvious than on the bafflingHow To Hide Your Feelings which shares a rather suspicious number of similarities with All-American Rejects’ Give You Hell. Some will make their own mind as to how that comparison might serve as a potent critique in its own right.

FIVES: Alternative Christmas Songs

Here at Already Heard, we’re getting into to the Christmas spirit and for this edition of “FIVES” we’re going to be focusing on our five favourite “Alternative” Christmas songs.

Every year a variety of Christmas songs are released, some go unrecognised and some are unfortunately played to death. We’ve decided to pick out some of best “alternative” Christmas songs from recent years.

What is your favourite ”alternative” Christmas song? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter.

Reuben - Christmas Is Awesome
As a teenager, I often wondered “Why isn’t there a good Christmas rock song?”. After years of hearing the same old rotation of The Pogues, Mariah Carey and (god save us) Shakin’ Stevens, and with The Darkness not aiding matters with the dreadful ‘Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End)’, Surrey rockers Reuben finally came out with the answer to my prayers with ‘Christmas Is Awesome’. Commencing with jingle bells over a trademark jagged riff, Jamie Lenman shouts his way through 2 minutes of Yuletide menace (“look out for mistletoe or I will kiss your face”) and merriment at the ideal gift (“I got a DVD, and it was Dr Who!”), this is the musical equivalent of a 5-year-old charging around the house because Santa came. A festive frolic, this one is worth picking up Reuben’s ‘We Should Have Gone To University’ B-sides and rarities compilation alone. (OC)

Live Review: Warped Tour UK 2012 - Alexandria Palace, London - 10/11/2012

It is a long time in the making but finally the iconic Warped Tour has come back to the United Kingdom. It’s a far cry from the annual summer trek around America; firstly the weather forces the event to be inside and London hosts the only date of this “tour.” Nevertheless, it is a stellar bill and the event has been sold out for months, leading to high anticipation of Warped Tour UK today.

The first band that Already Heard catch today at Warped are A Loss For Words. Unfortunately we arrive slightly after The Story So Far have come offstage but judging by the amount of people walking around later with newly purchased ‘Under Soil And Dirt’ vinyl, it was a good set. A Loss For Words put on a professional if slightly uninspiring set. Sound hampers any enjoyment of the start of their set, but the band hit their stride by the time they launch into a cover of Jackson Five’s ‘I Want You Back.’ The set is littered with tracks from most recent album ‘Sanctuary’ but the songs that get the best response still are from ‘The Kids Can’t Lose,’ including closing track ‘Stamp of Approval.’ They are a band that are very much suited to the Warped atmosphere and go down well with the already large crowds in the venue. (2.5/5)

Up next are Blood On The Dancefloor. There’s not much to say about these godawful Cyber Dog abortions. They arrive to an ear-piercing shriek from the assembled female masses, a terrible omen of what is to come. I have never seen or heard of these monsters before today but from the moment they appear on stage, I can’t quite believe what I am watching. Horrible synth noises blare forth and they commence a set of squelchy noises. I’m not sure how anyone could stomach this but the crowd goes wild for this, apparently. I must be out of touch with modern culture because I see absolutely nothing redeemable in this set. (0/5)
