Orange County’s Kevin Nichols has been writing songs since he was 13 years-old. Now at the age of 21, Nichols has honed in a sound dominated by a mix of fuzz-laden guitars and torturous, melodic vocals.
Next month Kevin will be releasing his third self-produced full-length – ‘I Don’t Wanna Die But I Wanna Die’. While the record focuses on his fuzz-centric style, we’re premiering a song from the record that offers a stylistic departure for Nichols. ‘Blood & Brick’ is a summery, laid back number with Nichols’ hometown of Laguna Beach being a clear influence with its shimmering guitars.
“At it’s core ‘Blood & Brick’ is a song about realising you’re not special and feeling powerless. The name of the song and the first verse essentially allude to the losing battle of punching a wall as an analogy of what it’s like to fight the inevitability of growing up. It’s about the first time I ever was straight with myself about whether or not my dreams will come true,” explains Kevin. He goes on to say, “But, it’s also about coming to the conclusion that I’m already so fortunate and in a way already living my dream so: just keep doing it, never stop and you know, ‘quit fucking whining.’ I classify it as one of my ‘wake up’ songs because once in a while I wake up in the middle of the night with a melody or idea in my head and I’m forced out of bed to go work on it. This was one of those instances.
"I chose to challenge myself with ‘Blood & Brick’ from a songwriting as well as a sonic standpoint. Not once in the song do I hit my fuzz pedal, nuff said ha!”
‘I Wanna Die But I Don’t Wanna Die’ by Kevin Nichols is released on July 7th through Open Door Records (pre-order).
