Influences: 5 Albums That Influenced Lizzy Farrall

Chester-based songstress Lizzy Farrall aims to make a lasting impression in 2018, and even though we’re just weeks into the new year, she’s heading in the right direction.

At the start of this month, she released her debut EP in the form of ‘All I Said Was Never Heard’. A promising set of songs that showcases her poignant, maturing songwriting against a backdrop of twinkling acoustics with a hint of pop-rock courtesy of ‘Better With’. She also opened up for Pure Noise labelmates Seaway on their recent UK tour.

Now with her first EP and tour ticked off, we decided to ask Lizzy Farrall which five records has inspired the young singer-songwriter. From classic emo rock, delicate acoustic songs, prominent pop-punk and more, Farrall’s influences is a diverse mix.

Jimmy Eat World – Bleed American

While recording the EP at Ranch Studios in Southampton, ‘Bleed American’ was pretty much my soundtrack for the five days. I had to travel 5 hours there and back and this album was definitely my saviour.

I honestly don’t feel there is a bad song on this album. The diverse tone between the songs, for me, is the biggest influence. I think it keeps you interested throughout. It was definitely a feeling I wanted to have with my EP.

Damien Rice – O

Damien Rice was one of my main influences to start writing my own lyrics. I think Damien’s lyrics are so honest and powerful. When I first heard his music I remember thinking “I want to write lyrics like this”.

I hold this album very close to my heart, While my parents went through their break up, my mum had this album on repeat and she would sing her heart out to this album while driving in the car. From seeing how much my mum could relate to Damien’s lyrics on this album, it became a goal of mine to write lyrics that people could connect with too.

Foxing – The Albatross

Everything Foxing writes is like a piece of art. The instrumentation in their songs seems so carefully thought out. They help carry out the story behind the deep lyrics and I differently wanted to capture a similar tone with my EP.

I’ve seen Foxing live twice and both times it was one hell of an emotional rollercoaster. Their presence on stage is breathtaking and eye-catching. It has definitely been a big influence to me when performing live as well.

The Story So Far – Under Soil And Dirt

I’ve been a big fan of The Story So Far even before I signed to Pure Noise. I took influence from the fact their lyrics are not the most uplifting, but they hide this with their lively instrumentation, giving a great balance between both. I think this album is a prime example of it and has to be my favorite of theirs.

When writing ‘Better With’ and I wanted to achieve the same balance of uplifting and sad, so I used The Story So Far as sort of guidance for the song.

From Indian Lakes – Absent Sounds

‘Absent Sounds’ is one of my favourite produced albums. The sound of the vocals and drums are a big influence to me. I’m a big fan of the ambient sound and this album is so satisfying I can’t even put into words.

Whenever I listen to this album, it completely takes my breath away. I want my music to sound as natural as it does on this album.

‘All I Said Was Never Heard’ EP by Lizzy Farrall is out now on Pure Noise Records.
