Review: Lizzy Farrall – All I Said Was Never Heard EP

When Lizzy Farrall signed with favoured pop-punk/hardcore label, Pure Noise Records, last spring there was very little known about her. Nevertheless, the Chester-based singer-songwriter looks to change that in 2018 with the release of her debut EP, ‘All I Said Was Never Heard’. Over the course of its five songs, Farrall’s dainty vocals are pushed to the forefront as she sings about past relationships with intimate maturity.

‘Broken Toy’ twinkles and blissfully captures Farrall’s story of a failed relationship. Delicate, plucky acoustics compliment her tender voice. For the most part, stripped back instrumentation dominates ‘All I Said…’ with ‘Pack of Wolves’ adding more grounded texture to Farrall’s sound. Alongside warm percussion is soothing harmonies, supporting her breezy vocal chords. Alongside later song, ‘Better Off’, she conveys the ability to transfer the hurtful lyrical tone to her delivery.

On the surface, ‘Better With’, sticks out from everything else on offer here as Farrall gives a stylistic nod to her pop-punk covering origins. With a full band backing, it sees her flexing her pop-rock muscles with effective results, most notably its energetic tempo and use of “woah-oh-oh”’s. However, lyrically, Farrall keeps within the confines of what it is like to be in love. Here, she captures the emotional rush of new found love.

Even though Farrall’s tales of broken young love aren’t anything new, on songs such as ‘Hollow Friends’ and ‘Better Off’ she intricately develops a connection with the listener. Poignant and beautifully honest, ‘All I Said…’ shows a growing artist with lyrical cohesiveness. Musically, it leaves Farrall at a crossroads; jaunty acoustic-led singer-songwriter or well-rounded, pop-rock songstress. Either way, Lizzy Farrall’s first steps show plenty of promise.
