#NewMusicFriday (July 28th 2023)

An eventful July ends with a handful of noteworthy releases for this week’s #NewMusicFriday.

Leading the charge is the return of Mutoid Man, delivering ‘Mutants’ after six years away. Elsewhere UK genre-fluid trio Yonaka share ‘Welcome To My House’Post Malone shows his acoustic side on ‘Austin’ and Jim Lockey And The Solemn Sun bring a streamlined indie-rock sound as they return with ‘Colour’.

There is also a fair share of metal releases to get stuck into. KoRn give 2007 ‘Untitled’ the deluxe treatment to celebrate its 15th anniversary. Thy Art Is Murder are also in a celebratory mood as they drop a live outing for a ‘Decade of Hate’. While Sevendust and From Ashes to New both drop new records containing plenty of explosive hard rock. Furthermore, deathcore fans are sure to love Signs of the Swarm‘s ‘Amongst the Low & Empty’.

Mutoid Man – Mutants

From the moment you hit play on opening track. ‘Call of the Void’, it’s clear Mutoid Man haven’t missed a step since their last recorded output in 2017. ‘Mutants’ sees Cave In founder Stephen Brodsky (guitar/vocals) and Converge drummer Ben Koller being joined by High On Fire bassist Jeff Matz to create a frenzied, riff-filled record. It thrives on (and embraces) elements of metal, prog, punk, and sludge with a high standard of technical prowess and sharp songwriting throughout.

‘Frozen Hearts’ fiercely rumbles as Koller’s frantic drum work and Matz’s bass take control. ‘Broken Glass Ceiling’ arrives with a swagger partly due to Brodsky’s versatile guitar and his lyrical earworm charm shines through. While ‘Siren Song’ is dominated by a stoner rock groove that is irresistible, before ‘Graveyard Digger’ serves up a rapid metallic speed train.

With every chugging guitar, chaotic drum fill, or downtrodden bass line, Mutoid Man‘s experience shines through, even on later cuts such as ‘Siphon’ and the unabashed heavy metal blast of ‘Demons’. Although Brodsky’s otherworldly shredding occasionally tires, when combined with Koller and Matz’s energetic rhythms, it makes ‘Mutants’ a thrill ride of an album.
