Song of the Day: Carpark – ‘Happy on Mars’

Carpark

Meet Carpark. The London alt-pop trio are preparing to release a new EP, ‘Born To Be Average’, next month. Today, they delivered ‘Happy on Mars’. Lifted straight out of a coming-of-age film soundtrack, it sees the three-piece breeze along effortlessly. Lead vocalist (and bassist) Sophie Scott is complemented by guitarist Hattie Upton-Dance and drummer Lauren O’Donnell Anderson harmoniously. Its atmospheric build proves to be thoroughly compelling, while simultaneously demonstrating Carpark‘s versatility.

“If you’re looking for a rock ballad and Elon Musk diss track all-in-one, look no further,” said Carpark on their new single.

‘Happy On Mars’ follows up ‘Born To Be Average’s two other singles so far. Both ‘MIA’ and ‘Suburbs Of Hell’ saw Carpark head into an infectious alt-rock direction, leaning on their youthful pop-punk influences. As for ‘Born To Be Average’ itself, the upcoming five-track collection sees Carpark thrive with plenty of favourable hooks, driving melodies, and in the case of ‘Happy On Mars,’ a stirring, rose-tinted gem.

The arrival of ‘Born To Be Average’ comes off the back of a whirlwind three years. From playing their first show in a friend’s garage, they’ve gone on to play shows alongside the likes of Lauren Hibberd and popped up at the 2000trees Festival last summer. 2023 also saw Carpark ink a deal with Saviour Music Group, an Essex-based artist-led indie collective, as well going out on their first headline tour. The new year looks even brighter. Not only is ‘Born To Be Average’ set for release imminently, Carpark will be joining British indie rock “legends” The Libertines for two shows later this month.
