Like many others, Letdown‘s origin story has become quite familiar in recent years. In what started as a pandemic project for multi-instrumentalist Blake Coddington, has blossomed into an emerging alt-rock/pop artist with a strong online community. With a debut album expected later this year, Coddington has been dropping several tracks since the turn of the year, with the latest being ‘Raincoat’.

Blending hip-hop beats with plucky guitars, Coddington’s tale of a toxic relationship provides a massive, infectious chorus as he questions “What did I do this time?” against a punchy rhythm. While past singles ‘Hate Myself’ thrived in a bold and sleek anthemic setting, ‘Raincoat’ considerably takes a more simple and effective approach.

Lyrically, Blake paints a compelling narrative of a troublesome relationship, full of complaints, arguments, and apologies. “[It is] the bittersweet dance of two individuals trapped in a relationship they both yearn to escape,” states Coddington. “‘Raincoat’ encapsulates the torment of a relationship riddled with apologies yet devoid of solutions, exploring the intricate dynamics of remaining in a situation neither party truly enjoys. It vividly portrays the struggles and contradictions inherent in toxic relationships.”

The release of ‘Raincoat’ comes just over 12 months on from the release of Letdown‘s ‘Crying In The Shower’ EP. The seven-track outing maintained the viral momentum that Coddington had built while being lockdown in a one-bedroom apartment in Indiana. He counters arena-sized hooks with words of inner turmoil and cathartic reflection. Take ‘Go To Hell’s annoyingly catchy playful “La-da-da”s that sees Blake confess his addiction to a partner, even though they’re not good for him. Elsewhere, ‘Evil’ sees Coddington as his most confessional. ‘Crying In The Shower’ has been followed up with a few of well-received singles (‘Hate Myself’, ‘Anxiety,’ and ‘Making Miseris’) and being playlisted on alternative radio in the States.

Heading into the summer, Letdown will join Stand Atlantic, Magnolia Park, The Home Team, Scene Queen, and Honey Revenge on the ‘Idobi Radio Summer School’ tour. Set to hit a whole host of spots in the US, Letdown is sure to win over fans of his touring pals through his emotive, anthemic and accessible sound.

‘Raincoat’ by Letdown is available now on Big Loud Rock.
