After a five-year wait, Michigan emo punks Charmer will return on May 23rd with a new record. It’s called ‘Downpour’ and will be released through Counter Intuitive Records.
The announcement is joined by the release of ‘Arrowhead’. It ignites the return of the quintet, as they preview their third album. Drawing influence from the driving, anthemic vibes of early Alkaline Trio and Bayside, it’s a gritty, energetic reintroduction to Charmer. It considerably marks a musical evolution for the band. 2018’s self-titled debut leaned into the band’s 90s midwestern emo influence, painting a picture of suburban heartbreak. While 2020’s ‘Ivy’ was punchier, threading together elements of emo, pop-punk, and post-hardcore.
‘Downpour’ will also feature last October’s single, ‘Rose Thorns’. Matching the energy of ‘Arrowhead,’ it showcases vocalist/guitarist David Daignault’s melodic strength.
Joined by guitarist Neil Berg, bassist Zack Alworden, and drummer Nick Erickson, ‘Downpour’ sees Daignault ruminate on recent experiences. From living in the isolated Michigan region of Upper Peninsula, to becoming a new parent, its 11 songs promise to be cathartic, passionate, and soul-stirring.
Having been a fan of Charmer since their eponymous full-length, it’s good to see them reemerge with a set of songs that hint at organic growth.
