Album Review: Boy Jumps Ship – Be Good. Be Gracious.

Picking up where they left off with 2011’s ‘Engines’ EP, Newcastle Upon Tyne’s Boy Jumps Ship have once again produced a bold collection of anthemic alt-rock in ‘Be Good. Be Gracious.’

From the start the quartet showcase their ability to produce big choruses with recent single ‘Black Hearts Don’t Beat’. However the band subtly show a mature dynamic and sensibly avoid going down the overall pop-rock route, yet as shown on ‘Better Days’ the band aren’t afraid to keep the momentum going as they deliver another thriving, confident number with introspective lyrics, which once again are focused and appreciative.

Whilst lyrically BJS show maturity, musically they have a youthful exciting zest to their sound that shines through on tracks like ‘Fugitives.’ It’s clear by this point the band are full of confidence, and rightly so as‘Be Good. Be Gracious.’ sees a band more concentrated and focused having benefited from both time as a band. Whilst the production work of Peter Miles has also helped the band on here.

Although the (obvious) comparisons of Biffy Clyro and Twin Atlantic may still be there for some; they’re all from the North so they all soundalike right? Boy Jumps Ships put in a great effort it making their mark on ‘Be Good. Be Gracious.’ as it sees the band develop with brimming confidence, catchy lyrics and explosive hooks. Surely bigger things await for this Geordie four-piece?
