When the itch returns, it’s pretty hard to stay away from making music when your band has previously called it a day. Take Down I Go for example. Since their disbandment in 2012, the band was pulled back together by a desire to incite bedlam as well as an overachieving Kickstarter campaign resulting in ‘You’re Lucky God, That I Cannot Reach You’.

Pushing together the most erratic of riffs with the deepest cuts of brass, the band deliver an assault on the senses unlike any attempted since their last release. Never content with one sound, the band spasm and jolt around the cusp of the genre list with ’The Hired Hand And The Lake Dwellers’, swelling with pulsing grooves and beautifully distant harmonies and ‘Of Marbendill’ swaying in the wind with jazz leaning trumpets. In comparison, ‘An Outlaw Killed’ bounces with Clutch-esque smokiness and closer ‘The Sending’ builds from a rickety stoner base into a distorted and disturbing conclusion of feedback and mystery.

‘You’re Lucky God, That I Cannot Reach You’ is a darkly rich, cataclysmically brooding descent into the untouched and unique. Refreshingly heavy and chock-full of orchestral triumph, Down I Go have returned to the forefront of heavy music with a stamp of authority and a devilish grin across their baying chops.
