Album Review: False Advertising – Brainless EP

It’s been just six months since False Advertising released their well received self-titled debut, so it seems like a strange moment for an EP. However, smart cookies that they are, the DIY power trio decided to hit the studio one December weekend hot from touring the album and capture the creative energy of their live shows. Throw in a tumultuous time for Jen Hingley (vocals/guitar/drums) and you have a potent cocktail for an energetic romp through five new cuts of nineties-influenced ”twisted power grunge”.

Lead-off single ’Alopecia’ is breakneck grunge with an air of disquiet; the chorus of “I hope my hair don’t fall out” is disturbingly hooky, but the thrash-along feel makes for a quality track. ‘Give It Your Worst’ follows with Elastica-esque angular riffing and a strong pop influence to the chorus, making it bright yet fuzzy; the shared vocal and bass filled slowdown adding depth to the arrangement.

‘You’re Too Slow’ is more upbeat but has a similar vibe and structure, although there’s a likeable energy and another nice instrumental break. ‘Piece of My Mind’ then switches things up with a slower tempo and Chris Warr taking the lead, though Jen provides a fine complimentary vocal. There’s a dirty feel to the sound of this intense slow burner, its more daring arrangement making good use of Josh Sellers fine bass work – excellent track. The poppy vibe of ‘Sigh’ then closes proceedings in a laid-back groove, the bright melody disguising a deeper frustration.

Despite the production limitations of the DIY approach, this is a well-executed record that’s instrumentally strong with plenty of hooks. It’ll be well worth catching their "instrument-swapping high energy” live show, as well as seeing where they go from here.
