Album Review: The Maddigans – Love vs. Passion EP

Canadian pop-punk trio The Maddigans know all about hard work. They’ve organised eight Canadian tours, two US tours and have gained slots on the Vans Warped Tour twice. Oh, and somewhere along the journey, they’ve somehow managed to find time to release three CDs. Their latest EP ‘Love vs. Passion’ was released during the summer.

‘Intoxicate Me’ kicks off proceedings: Trisha-Lynn’s sugar sweet vocals melt effortlessly with their melodic hooks and bouncy choruses. Like a ray of sunshine bursting through storm clouds, The Maddigans reel us in with their bubble gum music; their upbeat songs, such as ‘Talk This Way’ and ‘Miles Ahead’, are slick and incredibly, irrevocably catchy.

The trio take their fans on a rollercoaster, travelling from one sugar-coated track to another. ‘Miles Ahead’ switches to ‘Melodies’, another vibrant and bold track. Their sing-a-long choruses are a perfect feature of this summery song, along with slick and tight drumming.

As they end with ‘Taking Chances, Placing Bets’, Trisha-Lynn challenges: “I dare you to slow us down;” but with a cracking EP like this, it’s going to be almost impossible to stop this train known as The Maddigans.
