Nowadays, risk-takers are hard to come by. Treasures’ debut EP ‘Alive’ emerges a pivotal 3 years after their formation, prioritising learning their trade on the road above tracking their punchy melodies. Bursting with potential teasing through 5 tracks of kaleidoscopic talent, it’s clear to see Treasures are indeed ‘Alive’.
Taking their cocktail of catchy subdued riffs and angst-ridden vocals to the stage alongside Don Broco and Mallory Knox, the Treasures lads have developed local notoriety which is begging to be explored further. Long overdue yet indicative of every lesson they’ve learned in 3 short years, the self-released debut EP demonstrates each member’s core potential in turn. Colossal choruses collide with heavy and immersive guitars in a show of defiance and emotional conviction to complete ‘Alive’’s atmosphere of relatable trepidation.
“We keep our friends closer but our enemies don’t know we’re never going home”, cries vocalist Nick Beeney with an unmistakeable southern twang loaded with conviction. Destructive and insistent, title track ‘Alive’ showcases the intensely phenomenal guitar work that characterises their successful future. Treasures’ distinct You Me At Six vibe suggests they have plenty more pent-up emotions to unleash in future, but this brief dalliance with some of them is tantalising enough.
The contagious ‘Do What I Want’ provides punk crowd chants to add to a towering theme of energetic revenge, complemented by punchy leading lines provided by Messrs Page and Veel. In contrast, the solemn echoes of ‘The Waiting Game’ visit the contemplative side of the quintet. The authoritative presence of Dewsbury’s drum work completes a reflective angle completed expertly by Beeney’s heartbreaking line “there she goes, she’s piercing your armour”.
Contemplative, defiant and scornful, ’Alive’ is a fantastically diverse debut. Keep an eye firmly open for Treasures appearing on the horizon, the Basingstoke boys will be waiting patiently for their festival place.
