The rise and rise of With Confidence has been a quick but fruitful endeavour. Thanks to a stint on the road with certified superstars and fellow Aussies 5 Seconds Of Summer, the band have gone from preppy upstarts to genuine world domination contenders. Now, with their debut full-length ‘Better Weather’ the band will be hoping that they soar rather than flop at the most vital of moments. Fortunately, it’s the former.
Though on paper it would be easy to write it off as just another cookie-cutter offering, there’s a lot on ‘Better Weather’ that comes as a welcome surprise. Taking all the best parts from each corner of pop punk, binding them together with an ear for an infectious pop chorus and letting it out in the wild, With Confidence have forged the formula for a huge song down to a tee.
Opener ‘Voldemort’ lends itself to early All Time Low, ‘Keeper’ has a large serving of grit to compliment its gigantic hooks and ‘Gravity’ has the variety of chorus that will be stuck between your ears for weeks on end. With Confidence know what they want to be and aren’t ashamed by it. You can hear that they love the music that they are making and truly believe in the art that they are creating, rather than just producing it for the sake of it.
When they slow it down, the songwriting is just as strong as well. Piano-led beauty ‘Long Night’ oozes with heartbroken agony and closer ‘Waterfall’ is a smouldering builder of an anthem that brings the curtain down in emphatic fashion.
‘Better Weather’ as a whole is a slick, professional and sticky sweet offering that should see With Confidence become one of the front-runners in the pop punk genre. Possessing as much pomp and precision as it does dirt and dissonance, the band have crafted a set of songs that will have something for you to become obsessed with, no matter what area of pop punk you are a fan of.
