Last year, Balance and Composure returned with ‘with you in spirit’, their first album in eight years. However, despite delivering 10 new songs, it wasn’t the track that sparked the Pennsylvania rockers’ creativity. That was done by their powerful new song, ‘Alive & Well’.
“‘Alive & Well’ was the first song we worked on together when we decided to become a band again,” shares Balance and Composure vocalist Jon Simmons. “It was an idea that Erik (Petersen, guitarist) had sent us in early talks of maybe reuniting and I sang over it almost immediately which began the entire process of writing a record. It took a few different shapes before getting it to where it is today.”
The track sees them work with frequent collaborator and “bonus member,” Will Yip. Led by Simmons’ distinct voice, it sees the quintet take a more direct and driven approach, partly thanks to drummer Dennis Wilson and Matt Warner’s bouncing bass. With themes of disconnection and internal struggle, ‘Alive & Well’ shares similar issues to those found on ‘with you in spirit’.
The release of ‘Alive & Well’ comes as Balance and Composure for a North American tour, supporting Turnstile as they celebrate 10 years of ‘Peripheral Vision’.
