On October 4th, Balance and Composure will return with their first album in eight years via Memory Music. Titled ‘with you in spirit’, it will see the quintet team up with long-time collaborator and producer Will Yip.
The ten-track record is described as an “arresting, atmospheric collection of melodic post-punk and towering rock“. As evident on their new single, ‘cross to bear’, Balance and Composure vocalist and guitarist Jon Simmons presents a self-reflective collection, questioning faith, mortality, and family responsibilities.
“I began to feel like a kid again,” says Simmons reflecting on working with his bandmates again. “We were writing these songs for the pure reason of having an outlet and getting together with your friends, no pressure. We were longing for it, and we found it as soon as we got together. We didn’t want that train to stop.”
The announcement of ‘with you in spirit’ comes just weeks ahead of Balance and Composure‘s first visit to the UK since reforming last year. They’ll be appearing at Manchester’s Outbreak Festival on June 29th, before a one-off headline show at London’s Islington Assembly Hall on July 1st.

Listen to Balance and Composure’s New Single – ‘cross to bear’
‘cross to bear’ is the lead single from ‘with you in spirit’ and sees Balance and Composure stylistically tread familiar ground. Drenched in atmospheric guitars that ring out, it’s an alluring number with Simmons’ familiar, mournful voice. When combined with a firm rhymic section, it produces a compelling teaser for what else ‘with you in spirit’ has to offer.
